Woman who killed cadre demanding sex charged with assault
Source: South China Morning Post (subscription required)

Jun 08, 2009

The hotel worker who killed a cadre who demanded sex in Hubei has been charged with assault instead of murder, mainland media have reported.

On May 10, Deng Guida , a low-level town official in Badong county, and two colleagues demanded that 21-year-old pedicurist Deng Yujiao have sex with them. Although Deng Yujiao told them she was not a prostitute, Deng Guida slapped her head with a pile of cash and twice pushed her onto a sofa. Deng Yujiao fought back and, in the chaos, fatally stabbed Deng Guida and wounded his colleague, Huang Dezhi , with a fruit knife before she called police and turned herself in.

She was later detained on a charge of murder, which sparked public outcry because many believed she was defending herself against officials who were abusing their privileges. Last week police said Deng Yujiao had acted in self-defence, albeit with "excessive force".

....The case escalated into a social issue because Deng was dubbed a heroine struggling against the authorities and their unbridled rights. Many netizens, volunteer lawyers, women's rights groups and other civil rights groups showed support and sympathy. Two Beijing lawyers were willing to defend for her free of charge, but they were dismissed by Deng's mother.

1. So self-defense is not a Chinese concept, apparently.
Still, she sounds lucky it wasn't worse; I'm glad she had a lot of support.

2. No, in para 3, "police said Deng Yujiao had acted in self-defence"
I doubt she'll be convicted even of assault. EVERYONE regards her as a heroine. In these times, the government doesn't need people stirred up even more about abusive officials.

3. I'm hopeful they'll let it drop.
Are you from China or living there? How is it? Do tell!

4. I live in Hong Kong, China just minutes away from the Mainland, but really a world apart.
Hong Kong's a great place to do business. And it's not a bad place to live aside from the pollution. Public transport is excellent. The press is free. English is spoken everywhere. The British rule of law is still followed. The government isn't perfect, and isn't democratic, but it aims to please. (Please everyone, that is, but when push comes to shove, it's please Beijing first, big business second, and the people third.)

About half the people live in subsidised government housing. We have both public and private health care. The rich go to private hospitals, and the rest of us go to free public hospitals, which are just as good and often better equipped. Primary and secondary education is all free starting in September, though we have many very expensive private and schools as well. We have six universities, and students only have to pay 20% of the tuition.

Taxes are 15%, though most people don't pay any, and there is no sales tax or customs duty, except on cigs, alcohol and perfume or something like that.

The economy, especially re-exports from the mainland and financial services, has been badly hurt by the financial meltdown, but you don't really notice it, except for the empty high-end retail stores. The low end stores and restaurants are doing well.

As the high salaries in the financial sector have disappeared, rental prices in the areas popular with expats have plummeted, so, though I don't mention it here in HK, the downturn has been kind of beneficial to people like me. Home rental prices have plummeted, commercial landlords are happy to reduce the rent to keep you, and suppliers are giving lower prices and faster service. So for me, right now, Hong Kong is the perfect place to be.

5. I knew some people who lived there for a few years in
the 90s. Big bucks to do what this guy was doing; wheeler, dealer, developer.

My husband spent a month there working and said it was very expensive (food, drink), but he took some day trips and liked it.

I spent a night there en route elsewhere, and saw the harbor, but at that time of night, I needed a closer hotel! One day, I'll spend more time.

Now there are hotels closer with the new airport, I imagine.

7. My uncle once stopped a rapist with "excessive force"
Rapist lived and sued, and my uncle had to go to court, but he felt that saving a woman from that kind of crime was worth it.

8. Sadly that is generally the case...
Its usually a mistake to let a rapist or armed intruder live.
