U.S. allegedly blocked extra bodyguards

The Bush administration blocked a last-minute attempt by Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to bolster his bodyguards -- mostly former U.S. Special Forces members -- fearing he wanted them to organize and lead a counterattack against the rebels who threatened his presidency, knowledgeable sources said Sunday.

U.S. officials also forced a small group of extra bodyguards from the San Francisco-based Steele Foundation to delay their flight from the United States to Haiti from Sunday to today -- too late to help Aristide, said the sources, who are close to Aristide.

With friends like the US..

1. One of the "rebels" was quoted in a thread yesterday
saying they had an "in" in the palace. I figured it had to
be the Steele bodyguards. I must say Aristide seems a bit
dumb about these things, unless perhaps he simply had no other
choice.

2. I heard this on Democracy Now yesterday
They probably wanted to make sure that when the US marines came to take Aristide away, they didn't get shot at by Aristide's bodyguards.

3. But he had been ruling under protection of US-sanctioned security.

And that security was withdrawn and denied when it came time to replace him. Simple.

The Steele Foundation listens to the US Gov't because it is a department of it.
