Pittsburgh Penguins win Stanley Cup Finals
Edited on Fri Jun-12-09 09:49 PM by t0dd
Source: KDKA

After a stinging loss to the Detroit Red Wings last year in the Stanley Cup Finals, Mario Lemieux was confident the Penguins would be back to battle for the Stanley Cup.

"We'll be back and we'll be much better next time," he said last year.

Boy, was he right.

The Penguins were the underdog as Detroit had 11 Stanley Cup titles under their belt and had won all previous home games in the series.

The Pens who struggled early in the season, put up a hard fight and fought harder in the post-season with saves like Rob Scuderi's shin guard block in Game 5 advancing Pittsburgh to a chance at winning in Game 7.

During the season, the Pens proved to Detroit that they wanted revenge and they meant business, but struggled on the road.

Game 7 proved to be different with the Pens beating the Red Wings 2-1. Finally, they hold Lord Stanley's Cup that they have been fighting for all year.

4. Bleh....Exactly what the NHL wanted.
I have a special hate for this team. Their #44 broke the neck Eric Cole in a dirty, from behind hit in 2006. If there is any guy in the NHL that I hoped never got his name of the Cup it was that creep. Geno got MVP? Whatever.

The silver lining is The Wings lost and I can rub it in to my father who is a Wings Fan. :D

39. Wow... one missed call (that didn't result in a goal) in game 3 and you're still bitter

Power plays in the series:

Detroit: 23
Pittsburgh: 14

Blaming the refs is laughable. 9 more power plays for the Wings in the series.... more than 1 more per game.

6. I live in Wheeling Wv I about 60 miles away from Pittsburg and I followed the Penguins
in the Stanley Cup finals in 1990-91 and 1991-92 when they won back to back Stanley Cups and I am so proud and happy they beat a great and nothing to be ashamed of talented Red Wings team. I really thought,Detroit would beat a very good Penguins team and maybe next year would be their year but thank God I was wrong. Great job PENS I am so happy!!! :toast: :toast:

I'm going to be sick. Sidney Crosby's name on the Cup should be spelled "Boo Hoo." The thouight if that whiner being immortalized is even worse than Kris Draper's baby daughter taking a dump in the Cup.

20. That much is clear - and his team, too.
The officiating in this series wasn't the worst I've ever seen, but it wasn't far from the top of the list. The Pens could have skated nine guys and not gotten flagged for it.

Edited on Sat Jun-13-09 01:36 PM by KamaAina
Whenever a Pittsburgh team wins a championship, those rooting for the opposing team are required to whine about the officiating.

See under Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals, etc. :eyes:

37. Funny you should bring up Seattle and Arizona
I grew up in Canada and never got around to picking a favorite NFL team (to me, football begins and ends with the Montreal Alouettes); there are a few I don't mind and a few I always root against. Pittsburgh and Seattle do not fall into either category.

Each year I'd watch the Super Bowl and generally find a way to root for one team over the other, but a few times I couldn't bring myself to care, I just wanted a good game. That was the case when Pittsburgh played Seattle - both teams had players I liked and disliked, I really didn't care who won.

The officiating in that game was so bad that I haven't wasted a day on a Super Bowl since, especially after Greg Aiello (NFL spokesnam) claimed the game was "properly officated." As such, I didn't see the Arizona game and therefore have no idea of what you're talking about in that one, but in the Seattle game the officiating was a disaster. Even Roethlisberger admitted (on Letterman's show, in front of millions) he didn't think he got in to the end zone on his "touchdown."

In fact, I didn't even watch the end of that one - as soon as Hasselbeck was called for a "low block" and Seattle was penalized 15 yards, I paid my tab and left. I was watching it in a bar surrounded by Steelers and Redskins fans, and when the Redskins fans pointed out bad calls, I didn't hear a single Steeler fan argue - the prevailing attitude was "hey, we'll take it, especially after the Polamalu call (from the conference final against the Colts)" Even Mike Pereira (NFL's director of officiating) admitted the "low block" was a lousy call. Unlike you, they seemed to know they were on the positive end of some bad calls.

I*'m not a Seattle fan, but they had a right to be livid. Just because your team wins doesn't mean the officiating was good. I was screaming "bullshit" when Polamalu got screwed against the Colts, too - and I even wanted the Colts to win, because a friend of mine had a son who works for the team. Lousy officiating is lousy officiating, and I hate it no matter who it affects. I don't restrict my outrage to games in which a Pittsburgh team has a favorable outcome.

So, from Section 85.3(l) of the Sports Handbook:

Whenever a Pittsburgh team wins a championship, those rooting for that team are required to act as if the officating was perfect and nobody has any right or reason to complain about any calls, no matter how blatantly wrong they are and no matter how many extra men their team gets to use, no matter how many baseless 'penalties' are issued against their opposition, or how many phantom scores they are awarded.

40. Um... no.... Orpik crossed the red line during his follow through.... no icing
It's called that way 1000 out of 1000 times in the NHL.

As long as the player crosses the line on his follow through, it is NOT icing.

In the immortal words of Ric WOOOOOO Flair, to be the man, you got to beat the man. The Penguins outplayed the Red Wings, just like the Wings outplayed the Pens last year.

I want these two teams to go at it again next year. There's no way anyone can ever convince me that the World Series and the NBA Finals are as exciting as the Stanley Cup. And when your team wins it, WOOOOO!

Look for a lot of baby Sidneys and Cindys and Ginos and Ginas and Sergeis and whatever the frack the female version of Sergei is making their March 2010 debuts at McGee Women's Hospital in the Burgh.

15. Question here ...
Hockey in HD is truly a gift from the gods. IMHO, no sport is enhanced to a greater degree by HD than hockey.

But I have a major complaint about that same TV coverage.

Why, WHY do the cameras shift to some kind of fan shot or commercial immediately after a whistle?

A lot of the game and gamesmanship occurs right after a whistle. The refs don't have to make calls because nobody saw what happened except for the folks in the stands and we all know they don't count.

Nearing the end of the 2nd period tonight, the whistle was blown in the Penguin end. The NBC folks were a bit slow on the trigger. The camera showed what was surely the hit of the night. Two seconds late on the cut to commercials. I believe the hittee was Datsyuk. I never knew the hitter. NBC never replayed that slip. The hit of the night.

WTF is that all about?

19. The youngest team captain to ever win it.
The Stanley Cup, donated by former Governor General of Canada Lord Stanley of Preston in 1892, is the oldest professional sports trophy in North America ... Originally inscribed the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, the trophy started out as an award for Canada's top-ranking amateur ice hockey club. Today, it is awarded to the top team in the National Hockey League, a professional ice hockey league.

In 1915, the two professional ice hockey organizations, the National Hockey Association (NHA) and the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA), reached a gentlemen's agreement in which their respective champions would face each other for the Stanley Cup. After a series of league mergers and folds, it became the de facto championship trophy of the NHL in 1926. The Cup later became the de jure NHL championship prize in 1947.

Since the 1914–15 season, the trophy has been won a combined 92 times by 17 active NHL teams and five defunct teams. Prior to that, the challenge cup was held by nine different teams. There are two seasons that the Stanley Cup has not been awarded: the 1918–19 season, because of a Spanish flu epidemic, and 2004–05, because of the NHL lockout.

Two Quebecers were tonight's game best players for Pittsburgh: Maxime Talbot and 'le jeune gardien' Marc-Andre Fleury (Flower) :)

I knew this thread would bring out the Crosby-haters, but the Pens played a great series & deserve the Cup this year. Crosby captained this team all the way to the prize!

The Red Wings just plain ran out of gas at the end, I think. I didn't see Chelios even once. Was he injured or just a healthy scratch?

Malkin was, hands down, the postseason MVP & earned the Conn Smythe!

The defense they played was amazing those last two games. You could see how they kept Detroit to the outside most of the time.

Next year will be the Flyers' year, though. All they needed this year was a better defense, and they already got the goalie I think they needed.
