High Court Dismisses 'Cuban Five' appeal
Source: CNN

Five Cubans convicted in 2001 of spying for the Castro regime had their appeal tossed out Monday by the Supreme Court.

The men had sought a new trial in a politically charged case that has attracted international attention. Lawyers for the "Cuban Five" said their trial in Miami was unfairly prejudiced by the larger community.

The justices without comment denied the request, leaving the convictions in place.

2. Convicted 'Cuban Five' spies lose bid for new trial
Source: Christian Science Monitor

The Supreme Court refused Monday to hear their appeal. Their lawyers had argued they couldn't receive a fair trial in Miami.

from the June 15, 2009 edition

Washington - Five Cuban intelligence agents convicted of spying on US military bases and anti-Castro exile groups in south Florida have lost their bid for a new trial outside Miami.

The US Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear their appeal.

Lawyers for the so-called "Cuban Five" had argued that as intelligence agents charged with working for the government of Fidel Castro, their clients could never receive a fair trial in Miami, a city dominated by anti-Castro Cuban exiles.

In addition to spying on military bases and exile groups, the men were charged with having helped the Cuban military shoot down and kill Cuban-American pilots flying two unarmed planes over the Florida Straits in 1996 ...

4. This is a big disappointment for me

but I understand that Pres. Obama could have been more supportive of the case and this might have made a significant difference in final justice for these Cuban heroes.

He has chosen to remain silent. I do not think he comprehends the injustice of this case.

I see little to no hope with Pres. Obama, it is as if Bush will have his third term after all. I pray that we can have some hope coming from Weinglass, who has been one of the main defense lawyers for the Cubans. I really have lost a lot of faith in Obama now. Whether it is possible to make amends for this terrible mistake, it would not seem likely during his term.

These people will return to Cuba, and it is safe to assume that they will have a lot of influence in Cuba because they will have been promoted to the level of Martí and the other Cuban martyrs. They will receive the highest honors that the Republic of Cuba can bestow upon them.

5. Boo hoo hoo
The convicted spies now have to stay in prison and serve out their sentences.

How unfair.
