Treasury Department Admits Challenging Independence of TARP
Inspector General

June 18, 2009 7:53 PM

ABC News' Jake Tapper and Matt Jaffe report: Officials of the Treasury Department
admitted late Thursday that they have asked the Justice Department to weigh in on how
much power they have over the Special Inspector General for the $700 billion Troubled
Asset Relief Program, known as SIGTARP.

The push for a legal ruling on SIGTARP's independence came after Special Inspector
General Neil Barofksy had asked Treasury Department officials to hand over documents
regarding a TARP recipient, a request that was denied.

Boy, it is as if this TARP thing was just a way for the politically well-connected to get their hands into the cookie jar!!!!

Anyone who trusts the political class around hundreds of billions in loosely monitored payouts should email me about a land deal in Florida....

2. If true, this is a major development. Remember how Paulson first
proposed a bill that would have granted him total control over the bailout with no oversight. The Treasury Department seems to be holding a silent coup. That's what this amounts to. They are stealing all the money, handing it to their friends in the banks -- and then, when we want health care reform, they will say there is no money.
That's the game here, and we all need to watch who's on first base because that is where the action is. Geithner and Obama seem to think we out here are blind to what is going on. We are not. If Democrats permit the Treasury Department and the White House to continue to pull this on the American people, the coming election outcomes cannot be guaranteed. There may be a lot of honest people and independents with huge support running in Democratic primaries against incumbents.

3. Something has to give
when we have two parties that are the same there is no reason to support either one.

6. A real disappointment, but not unexpected.
Barofsky has been very effective in his role as TARP IG. and now the administration's true loyalties are laid bare for the world to see.
