'Ten killed' in Iran clashes - state TV
Source: BBC

At least 10 people were killed when police clashed with "terrorists" in Tehran on Saturday, state TV says.

The official reports, which cannot be confirmed accuse "rioters" of setting two petrol stations and a mosque ablaze in protest at a disputed poll result.

State media also say five family members of one of Iran's most powerful figures, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, were arrested during the protests.

Meanwhile Iran has ordered the BBC's Jon Leyne out of the country.

"With regret, we can confirm that Jon Leyne, the BBC's permanent correspondent in Tehran has been asked to leave by the Iranian authorities. The BBC office remains open," a BBC statement said.

4. This isn't going away - as the "Hardliners" wished
Now we have the resentments of shooting their own countrymen building up. On top of that this generation of Iranians grew up without their fathers as so many were killed in the Iran/Iraq wars of the 80s.

Add on top of that Western Civilization seeping in through internet and media. Either the Hardliners dig in and crack down on this generation with mass-internment and summary executions by the 100s or they will be disposed

5. It's hard to believe how stupidly they have handled this whole thing.
Ahmadinejad had a lead. They could have stolen the election by only a few points and everyone would have been fine with it.

Imho, they're toast. I only hope that not too many people have to get killed before it's over.

Sort of reminds me of the History channel documentry on the Hippy culture of the late 60s. The role of women was significantly downplayed then as it is now

Rafsanjani's daughter arrested in Iran

TEHRAN: The daughter of Iran's former president Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani and four relatives were arrested over their involvement in protests against
alleged election fraud in Iran, the Fars news agency reported on Sunday.

Faezeh Hashemi, a renowned women's rights activist, former parliament deputy and head of women sports in Iran, has in the recent years emerged, like her father, as one of the main opponents of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

12. The parallels are outstanding. We are no better. Our leaders brought us to
where we are and we seem to be on a straight course to perpetuate our torture and blame terrorists role. There is only one exception = Guantanamo and other forces are driving that, not our leaders.

Yes, the parallels are striking.

Sad to say - Mr A is right - Britian and the U.S. shouod stay out of this. We lost our voice, our standing.

I just don't see even the remote possibility of the logic here. Wonder if Iranians will be fooled.

18. Media watchdog: 23 reporters arrested in Iran ( freedom of repress )
PARIS—Iranian authorities have arrested 23 journalists and bloggers since post-election protests began a week ago, according to a media watchdog that says reporters are a "priority target" for Iran's leadership.

20. The mullahs fear a "minority" uprising from the 'non Persian' population
12:51 PM ET -- Where are the guns?

Some readers have been surprised not to see more guns in the hands of the Iranian demonstrators (they're not urging them to carry guns, by the way, just surprised not to see them in light of the violent crackdowns).

Regarding this, NBC's Richard Engel reported this morning:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/13/iran-demonstrations-viole_n_215189.html

The information war is one war. But is much more concerned about a real war. And the only people who are armed in this country, in Iran, are most of the ethnic minorities -- the Baluchis, the Kurds, the Arab populations. So if this protest movement spreads deeply into those areas, then you have a real significant threat against the regime. That is why you are seeing the regime try and say don't participate, this is a foreign-inspired coup, these people in the streets are rioters and terrorists who will be dealt with accordingly.
