"I was recently made aware that Governor Sanford has frequently been eluding SLED agents and disappearing at odd times," Knotts said. Previously, Sanford has not been out of all contact - including with his own office - for this long before, a source, who insisted on anonymity, said.

His communications director, Joel Sawyer, wouldn’t disclose Sanford’s location but said that before the governor left town last week “he let staff know his whereabouts and that he'd be difficult to reach.”

38. Does Anyone Else Find It Odd.........
That it took 4 days for anyone here in South Carolina to even notice that he was gone? I sure as hell don't hear anyone calling for him to return, either. Most of us wish that he had done this immediately after his election, and that he stayed gone. He is a total embarrassment to the people of our State, and obviously is so out of touch with reality that he has to resort to these type of theatrics for any attention. I suppose that getting totally destroyed in the South Carolina Supreme Court by a 13 year old student, might give one some sort of inferiority complex. This guy has ruined our State economy, gutted our assistance programs, and aided every large business in this State to steal, pillage, and otherwise screw over our citizens. He has cut the State payroll by laying off Wildlife Officers, State Troopers, and every governmental agency staff that he could find, yet he has given us all-time record deficits, all-time high unemployment, and helped enact legislation that will keep South Carolina crippled for genrations to come. Other than that, he is a great guy, and would make one hell of a presidential candidate for the GOPosaurs in 2012, with the pig from Alaska as his running mate.

I read about the lawsuit filed by 18-year-old Casey Edwards; is there another suit by a 13-year-old? I couldn't find anything through Google. :hi:

Which is it?

Sanford typically is open about his whereabouts, and his office makes no secret of time spent on vacation or out of state.

But politicians, including the lieutenant governor, said they did not know Sanford was taking time away from his office.

36. Gone Hiking: Missing S.C. Governor Found
A spokesman for South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford says the chief executive is hiking the Appalachian Trail, which explains his perplexing absence.

A statement issued by Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer Monday night didn't make clear what part of the trail he was on.

Sanford hadn't been in his office for several days, and fellow politicians and his wife said they didn't know where he was.

Sawyer had said earlier in the day he wasn't aware that anyone on staff had spoken to the governor since Thursday.

First lady Jenny Sanford said Monday she had not spoken with her husband for several days. That includes Father's Day. The Sanfords have four sons.

40. Missing Gov. sparks political fight
Source: POLITICO Updated: 6/22/09 11:52 PM EDT

In a new twist to an already-bizarre episode, South Carolina’s lieutenant governor said Monday night that neither he nor Gov. Mark Sanford’s staff know where the governor is and that Sanford’s office refused his demand to talk to his fellow Republican.

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, who was elected separately from Sanford, issued a statement to POLITICO after a day of frenzied national speculation about the governor’s whereabouts.

Bauer said he called Sanford’s office Monday and requested an “immediate phone conversation with the governor.”

“That request was denied because the governor’s chief of staff does not know where the governor is, and has not communicated with the governor since he left South Carolina last Thursday,” Bauer said. “I cannot take lightly that his staff has not had communication with him for more than four days, and that no one, including his own family, knows his whereabouts.”

But Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer issued a statement late Monday night saying that the governor was “hiking along the Appalachian Trail,” the first word on Sanford’s location since he was seen departing the state capital on Thursday.

47. AP is saying that Sanford is upset about losing the battle on receiving incentive funds

An AP article this morning is reporting that when the court ruled again him saying that the state can receive fed funds, Sanford had to "clear his head" and took off hiking.

Just like a little kid throwing a temper tantrum and storming off.

And this is the guy the GOP wants to run for president in 2012?

I think its awesome he's out comuning with nature on the AT, one of the finest experiences of my teens. Perhaps he will return with a renewed zeal for the protection of our environment. Hey, I said perhaps.

But seriously, I can imagine that the spotlight would get a little crazy for anyone. I'm sure Barack would love to go back to Chicago and just hang with the family without photographers, reporters, gawkers, and ss agents.

50. It can get a little crazy
for anybody, you don't have to be a politician or be in the limelight. But the SOP is usually you put in a request for a VACATION. You know, you notify people who should be notified. You don't go disappearing in the middle of the night.

There is no justification for how he has handled this. Bizarre.

45. He's got both Democrats and Republicans a bit miffed
I was reading on CNN just now where both Democrats and Republicans are miffed over his disappearance. Both Republican Senator Jake Knotts and Democratic Senator John Land have commented on his disappearance.

This caught my eye too;

"I found out that he was taking frequent trips at odd times of the night in a SLED car with no security," Knotts said. "He would be driving. I got wind that he had taken another one of these types of capers last Thursday, and that nobody knew who he was with."

Hmmmm....is there another John Ensign or Larry Craig story here?

52. If he told staffers where he would be why wouldn't they relay that info
to the SLED to keep the situation from getting out of control? This wouldn't be so worrisome if he took off for an afternoon or even overnight to clear his head, but this is going on for days and has hit the national media.

Assuming that he just decided to run away from his life for awhile, it isn't right that a governor would take off like this leaving people to wonder where he is. Being governor is a huge responsibility and he has a duty to his staff and his constituency to be available at all times in case of emergencies. They should have a means of reaching him even if his whereabouts are not known. That's part of the deal when you sign on for a gig like this.

The other thing is he has children. It is thoughtless to go off leaving his wife no way to reach him in case of a family emergency.
