Violence flares again in Tehran

Security forces wielding clubs and firing weapons beat back protesters who flocked to a Tehran square, sources say.

UPDATE:

Violence flares again in Tehran

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Security forces wielding clubs and firing weapons beat back demonstrators who flocked to a Tehran square Wednesday to continue protests, with one witness saying security forces beat people like "animals."

.................

At least two sources described wild and violent conditions at a part of Tehran where protesters had planned to demonstrate.

"They were waiting for us," the source said. "They all have guns and riot uniforms. It was like a mouse trap."

"I see many people with broken arms, legs, heads -- blood everywhere -- pepper gas like war," the source said.

About "500 thugs" with clubs came out of a mosque and attacked people in the square, another source said.

Massacre In Baharestan Square?

That's the impression from several reports now coming in. Stay tuned. From an interview on CNN:

"I was going towards Baharestan with my friend. This was everyone, not just supporters of one candidate or another. All of my friends, they were going to Baharestan to express our opposition to these killings and demanding freedom. The black-clad police stopped everyone. They emptied the buses that were taking people there and let the private cars go on. We went on until Ferdowsi then all of a sudden some 500 people with clubs came out of mosque and they started beating everyone. They tried to beat everyone on bridge and throwing them off of the bridge. And everyone also on the sidewalks. They beat a woman so savagely that she was drenched in blood and her husband, he fainted. They were beating people like hell. It was a massacre. They were trying to beat people so they would die. they were cursing and saying very bad words to everyone. This was exactly a massacre... I don't know how to describe it."

1. I caught the last few minutes of that phone conv on CNN. I couldn't tell if it was current or
from days ago. I heard the woman say something about people being beat down with axes. She was begging "please help us". My dear God.

2. Right on cue....mullahs blame the US
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared on Wednesday that a disputed election result would stand, despite street protests that Iranian officials say Britain and the United States have incited.

"I had insisted and will insist on implementing the law on the election issue," Khamenei said. "Neither the establishment nor the nation will yield to pressure at any cost."

Now that police and religious militia have regained apparent control of the streets after the biggest anti-government protests since the 1979 Islamic revolution, Iran's hardline leadership is blaming the discontent on foreign powers.

"Britain, America and the Zionist regime (Israel) were behind the recent unrest in Tehran," Interior Minister Sadeq Mahsouli said, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.

9. Boy are they stupid
They cut off all media contact with the West, and then somehow expect their citizens to believe that the West is organizing these protests? How? How in the world is the West getting word to those thousands in Iran?

If nothing else, I hope that this opens the eyes of those Iranians who may have thought their leadership was benevolent in any way.

Truth is a good thing

5. Iran: Security forces throw protestors off bridge in violent attack
NCRI, Tehran, 18:30 – In the course of protests in Tehran on Wednesday:

Suppressive forces are preventing people from crossing the road near the Hedayat Mosque on the Jomhouri-Zahiroleslam Junction near Baharestan Square in Tehran.

Suppressive forces repeatedly attacked the protestors at the site with the aim of killing them. In one alleyway, security agents threw a woman in the middle of the road and savagely beat her. Angry people and protestors loudly cursed the agents. They also chanted ‘Allah-o-Akbar’ in protest.

Some 500 agents of the Revolutionary Guards suddenly moved in from side roads and above a pedestrian bridge. They threw a number of people off the bridge.

It is just now reaching major media...According to what is being said on Twitter thousands of people were allowed to mass at the square and then hundreds of Basij and police poured out of mosque and started shooting, hitting people with axes and throwing people off bridges!

This is horrible! It is hard not to want our military to do something but I know that is wrong...You just feel so helpless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think real action lies at the feet of the Chinese and the Russians! And they refuse to get involved so sanctions simply will not work!!!

I have never wanted to use our military more than now but I also know that would simply play into the regime hands.

33. Disgusting post.
It DOES sound bigoted because it IS a bigoted response, coming straight from a bigot. You casually and conveniently ignore this nation's own history of violence, massacre and pillage over the past 350 years, from the first settlers through the last, barbaric administration that WE and the rest of the world suffered through...much of the crimes committed in the name of appeasing fundy, pseudo-Christian freaks who'd like nothing more than to erradicate entire swaths of humanity from the face of the earth. I get the sense that you rather identify with them.

You're in the wrong forum, creep. There's a special place on the Intertubes for neanderthals who think and speak like you. I suggest you crawl back to it. Kindly clean up the slime trail you leave behind as you go.

43. Brave people being brave people
No matter what the religion, I don't think any brave person would do any less than the Sea Of Green people. They are standing up and getting the cr@p kicked out of them for doing so.

I don't think violent repression is a quaint ethnic practice, since it's so widespread, cutting across religions and ethnicities.

Your response is just an ugly way of refusing to help REAL PEOPLE.

59. You can't cut all outside communications...
...without bringing the country in question to a screeching halt. They're trying to selectively shot down the cell phone networks, along with blocking Twitter, Facebook, and similar sites. However, with the nature of technology, there's more ways around blocks than there are ways to block.

Yes, the Twitters have been shocking, glad that CNN has picked it up.

This ought to be on the air in all media.

68. At what point do the Iranian protesters start fighting back?
I know they are doing their best to try and have peaceful protests, but it appears as if these paramilitary groups are making it impossible.

At what point do the protesters say, "enough!" and start bringing clubs or other weapons to the protests?

I'm not advocating violence at all, I'm just wondering at point point will their patience run out and for frustration take over?

70. The Guardian: Tehran 'like a war zone' as ayatollah refuses to back down on election
• Reports militia drafted in and paid to beat protesters
• Ministers threaten to cut diplomatic ties with UK

Mark Tran, Robert Tait and agencies in Tehran
guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 24 June 2009 23.52 BST

Bloody clashes broke out in Tehran today as Iran's supreme leader said he would not yield to pressure over the disputed election. The renewed confrontation took place in Baharestan Square, near parliament, where hundreds of protesters faced off against several thousand riot police and other security personnel.

Witnesses likened the scene to a war zone, with helicopters hovering overhead, many arrests and the police beating demonstrators.

=snip=

The opposition website Rooz Online carried what it said was an interview with a man the government had shipped in to Tehran to quell the demonstrations. He said he was being paid 2m rial (£122) to assault protesters with a heavy wooden stave, and that other volunteers, most of them from far-flung provinces, were being kept in hostel accommodation, reportedly in east Tehran.

With the independent media banned from covering street protests, the reports could not be verified.

There were also unconfirmed reports tonight that Zahra Rahnavard, the wife of opposition candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, had been arrested. Earlier in the day she had called on the authorities to release Iranians who had been detained.
