If he'd bothered to leave someone else in charge, I could at least consider forgiving him.

At least when John Edwards visited his lover in the middle of his presidential campaign, he didn't leave a constituency hanging in the balance.

148. Leaving the NGA is a pretty big deal.
Next to PhRMA and AIPAC, the NGA is probably the most effective lobbying organization in Washington. It is particularly important to the Republicans right now, as they're only a few key players away from losing total control of the federal government.

The NGA, acting as an informal sort of "fourth branch" and representing a the consensus of the nation's state leaders, has massive influence which is rarely seen in the press or the public. Very little major legislation is considered in Congress (especially the Senate) without also considering the input of the NGA.

So, taking this tool out of that shed leaves it weakened and exposed to scrutiny, two things the Republicans cannot afford to have happen to them right now.

I hope independent researchers poke around the NGA and its hijinks over the past several years. I'm pretty sure they're as corrupted as everything else the GOP controlled in 2001-2008.

249. I feel sorry for the guy.

Repubs and conservatives are regretting ever having made family values part of their platform. They're dropping like flies.

I do get tired of hearing them say that they made a mistake. No, they did exactly what they wanted to do, until they were "exposed." It is one way that Christianity distorts things. Sin is not a mistake, and reforming and repenting is not something that you do after you get caught. We need a new word for that. I'd like to hear just one of them say: "I'm very sorry I got caught, and of course I won't do it again now that everybody's on to me."

I do miss the days when personal life wasn't a public matter, though.

...I wondered if it were a 'her' or a 'him'....then with the TV on in the background I then heard Sanford say 'her' and so I immediately went back to edit my post....to say "it's her". So it's all just an innocent misunderstanding.:)

Now we will see the repubs spinning this as an act of true character that he stood up and confessed what he's done. What a man! He owned up to it! Not that the lying pile of dog doo cheated on his wife, children, and state for an extramarital affair. No, he's a stellar human being because he confessed when caught with his pants down. He said something about this friend being in the audience today.
He said something like,"my friend slept on our basement and worked for our campaign.

Jerk ~ and then his lover is MARRIED with two children.

And then he talked about God's law etc. :puke:

is why someone in the audience, behind the camera, never stands up and shouts "You did it on FATHER'S DAY, you piece of crap! How in the HELL can you, of all people, talk about morals and God's law?!??!"

Why don't people interrupt crap speeches like this? Why don't people put these assholes in their place while they're trying to make their false apologies on camera?

Why don't ACTUAL moral, upstanding people show some intestinal fortitude and shut these false apologies down as they happen?

100. The Moral Majority was Falwell's. It probably took its name from Nixon's "Silent Majority,"
of 1969, as distinguished from the civil rights and anti-war demonstrators of the years prior to and during Nixon's adminstration. Those were considered "anti-establishment," so I guess the Silent Majority was the establishment--although these things are not always that logical.

The Moral Majority (kind of) morphed into the Christian Coalition.

That was total passive aggression.

She knew it, or she would have been asking for help. She knew he was fine.

I really don't know why crazies like this don't just resign ahead of time. Something in them wants the notoriety that comes from a public scandal.

Talk about an asshole...one thing to fuck around on the spouse ~~ but to screw over the kiddos on Father's Day? Low, really low.

Edited on Wed Jun-24-09 02:38 PM by JohnWxy

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) on Wednesday became the second Republican in as many weeks to admit an extramarital affair in a tearful press conference held just hours after returning from an unannounced vacation in Argentina.

"I have been unfaithful to my wife. I have developed a relationship with someone who started as a dear, dear friend from Argentina. It began innocently, as I suspect most of these things do," Sanford said in a sometimes rambling opening statement.

<snip>

Update at 2:29 p.m. ET: "I've let down a lot of people," he says. He also adds an apology for "people of faith across South Carolina."

Update at 2: 30 p.m. ET: The bottom line is "I have been unfaithful to my wife."

"I have developed a relationship with a dear, dear friend from Argentina. It began very innocently in just a casual e-mail back and forth."

He says it "recently developed into something much more than that."

Update at 2:32 p.m. ET: Sanford says he is resigning as chairman of the Republican Governors Association.

Update at 2:34 p.m. ET: Sanford says his wife has been aware of the affair and that he and his wife have been trying to work through it for about five months.

Update at 2:37 p.m. ET: Sanford says the affair began on a "very casual basis." He said the woman who lives in Argentina "developed a remarkable friendship over eight years" and about a year ago it "sparked into something more than that." He says he has seen her about three times since then, but that the affair was "discovered" about five months ago.

Update at 2:39 p.m. ET: He says he struggled with what to do about the relationship, "Oddly enough I've spent the past five days crying in Argentina."

218. Please don't tar us too broadly
The real common thread is that they have power and money, and therefore access to folks who will have sex with them. Something like 75% of men who earn over 75k a year admit cheating. I don't think it's a Carolina thing: it's a human thing.

And, on the heels of Ensign, Vitter, Craig, Giuliani and Foley, it looks more like a Republican thing. Of course, there was Clinton, Spitzer, Jackson and Edwards, too. But the hypocrisy is greater when you spend so much time complaining how homosexuals are threatening the institution of marriage. I guess the gays made him fly to Argentina to bang someone else's wife.

183. You mean like being caught being AWOL for five days because one of your rivals called the police and
demanded to know where you were? Then having it come out that your whereabouts were unknown, no wait, you were hiking in appalachia, no wait, you were in Argentina, so easily confused with Appalachia.

You mean, that kind of vise? (BTW, your spelling was funnier.)

215. The missing Gov. headlines were actually worse than his admission..
All that drama only to have a huge let down when he admitted with the truth.

I'd love to know how exactly he was found missing? It's not like his wife called 911 and put out a missing person report for her husband.

Vise/Vice - I missed that one but it was this affair was a bit of nastiness if I don't say so myself.

Listening to Tweety, who is sympathetic btw. Now they're discussing whether or not Sanford used tax payer dollars for his booty calls to Argentina - OOPS.

Edited on Wed Jun-24-09 02:16 PM by sledgehammer
The author must feel like a real winner right now:

Well, thanks to the invasive media, starting today he is back at work in Columbia. So where has he been hiding? I’ll let the government-run media fight over which trails he was at. But don’t believe for a second that his wife and other VIP’s didn’t know where he was. Quite simply, he left for a few days to clear his head. He did this without taking his private security detail, which you and I pay for. Because of this no one really wanted to tell the media where he actually was. They knew - but they were smart enough to not give it away.

of the Republicans was not talking about family values, but claiming that they were the ONLY ones with family values and that the Democrats had none. It's being just that dishonest and ridiculous, and not admitting they were human, like everyone else, that got them in trouble.

I hear Mrs. Sandford and Hikey McCheat are "working it out". I hope it's like when my mother found out daddy was having an affair. I can still hear Mom now....in her calm but stern voice: "End it or I'll take every cent you are making now, every cent you have ever made, and every cent you will ever make in the future." It ended immediately. She knew my father well.

I wonder if we need to find a way to have Mittens get caught in a boys bathroom somewhere with his pants down.

187. He can still survive as governor & even run for president.
What he needs to do is tour the country with Carrie Prejean, advocating traditional marriage. That would be not just a two-fer, but a three-fer: he'd get back in the good graces of the traditional values crowd, he'd have fun, and he'd have a perfect cover ("Heck, this is some hard work, but I want to do right by my Lord!").

And the manner in which he disappeared (no one knows where he is, staff can't reach him, the wife's demeanor, lies and disinformation about the Appalachian Trail of all damn things, Father's Day, etc) is just too bizarre even for your typical Republican.

217. Some quotes from Sanford on Clinton, honesty, etc......
Edited on Wed Jun-24-09 04:30 PM by No Elephants
“The bottom line, though, is I am sure there will be a lot of legalistic explanations pointing out that the president lied under oath. His situation was not under oath. The bottom line, though, is he still lied. He lied under a different oath, and that is the oath to his wife. So it’s got to be taken very, very seriously.”

“We ought to ask questions…rather than circle the wagons for one of our tribe.”

“I think it would be much better for the country and for him personally (to resign). I come from the business side. If you had a chairman or president in the business world facing these allegations, he’d be gone.”

“The issue of lying is probably the biggest harm, if you will, to the system of Democratic government, representatives government, because it undermines trust. And if you undermine trust in our system, you undermine everything.”

Also, there may be an impeachment. http://thinkprogress.org/2009/06/24/sanford-affair/

And, he apparently did use state money to travel to Argentina (heard on the Chris Matthews Show, citing breaking news from Politico)

Sorry for the pun. Well, not that sorry.

Can the Dems finally put a rest to this "bipartisan" horseshit all too many of them speak of? I know they like being part of the Congressional Club but enough already.

The Republican'ts seem utterly unable to speak or act rationally about governance, policy, personal behavior or well, you name it. They're a joke and the Dems should treat them like they're irrelevant - because they are.

If you cannot trust someone in their most important life commitment, you cannot trust him/her to run the government, any government. Regardless of the position, party, race, religion, etc - just getr the fuck out and let your successor pick up the pieces. Get out of any job that requires public trust. If your spouse can't trust you, we can't either.
