(Riverside County, CA) Sheriff prepares for layoffs (200)

BUDGET: More than 200 jobs could be cut as a result of revenue losses in Riverside County.

The Riverside County sheriff will lay off an estimated 110 deputies if the Board of Supervisors cuts the public safety budget by 7.9 percent through the end of the year, Sheriff Bob Doyle said Monday.

The reason for the cuts is a county budget facing extreme revenue losses. The county is facing $145 million in lost revenues and cost increases for the duration of this year's budget and into the 2004-05 fiscal year.

Managers were told in January to cut their department spending by 8 percent through the end of the year and implement immediate hiring freezes, including public safety personnel.

Doyle painted a dire public safety emergency.
