Report: Hospitalized Iranians seized
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- Iranians wounded during protests are being seized at hospitals by members of an Islamic militia, an Amnesty International official told CNN.

"The Basijis are waiting for them," said Banafsheh Akhlaghi, western regional director of the human rights group, referring to the government's paramilitary arm that has cracked down on protesters during the violent aftermath of the June 12 presidential election.

Amnesty International has collected accounts from people who have left Iran and expatriates with relatives there who say the Basij has prohibited medical professionals from getting identification information from demonstrators wounded in the streets, Akhlaghi said on Saturday. They are also not allowed to ask how the injuries happened.

Once the patients are treated, the militia removes them from the hospital to an undisclosed location, she said.

Scholars, politicians, and journalists are also being 'detained', according to the report.

1. Is there any way we can rid of the Basij, it sounds like an
ailment, but I understand they are extremely cruel.

2. From the same article:
The Basij is carrying out brutal nighttime raids, destroying property in private homes and beating civilians in an attempt to stop nightly rooftop chants of "Allahu Akbar" (God is great).

The nighttime chanting is emblematic of the protests 30 years ago during the Iranian revolution, which toppled the monarchy of the shah.

4. The rulers will ultimately lose, but this is tough to take.
The Iranian people are good people. Their rulers are right there with Kim Jong Shithead and Mugabe as worst in the world.

Damn. I don't know what we can do, but if the mullahs and Ahmadickhead die, I will shed no tears.

Where is Sean Connery, 1962, Bond when you need him?

The Shah did the exact same thing. My only fear is that unlike the Shah, they will fight to the end.

10. Unfortunately, they remembered the important parts.
There were no paramilitary police, i.e. basij, during the last revolution. When the army wouldn't fire on its fellow citizens, the Shah's goose was cooked.

Those holiest of men who care so deeply for their flock made sure to close that little loophole.

15. As I recall, early into the protests ...
Edited on Mon Jun-29-09 09:45 AM by Akoto
There were messages going out - presumably from hospital staff - telling the wounded to go to foreign embassies that'd take them. They said protesters were being seized from the hospitals by the Basijis, without even any identifying paperwork.

I really feel for the people of Iran, and I wish the media wasn't turning its back on them in favor of Michael Jackson.
