Franken sworn in as Minnesota senator
Edited on Tue Jul-07-09 11:31 AM by onehandle
Source: AP

WASHINGTON – Comedian-turned-politician Al Franken is now a senator. The Minnesota Democrat was sworn in Tuesday, ending an eight-month political and legal struggle.

He gives the Democrats 60 votes to thwart possible Republican filibusters.

Vice President Joe Biden administered the oath. Former Vice President Walter Mondale accompanied Franken.

Franken took the oath on a Bible that belonged to the family of the late Sen. Paul Wellstone, D-Minn.

60 Democrats in the Senate still means 15 Republican-lites to hold up legislation.

104. Are you talking about the same Olympia Snowe who is more concerned
about the public health care option having an "unfair advantage" over for-profit insurance companies than her constituents having access to health care?

Sez she:
"If you establish a public option at the forefront that goes head-to-head and competes with the private health insurance market the public option will have significant price advantages."

Not much of an improvement over Liarman there...

39. Franken will be an effective voice for the Democratic Party
He has a sense of timing in his speech. He can pace an audience. He never speaks over his audience. He is, in short, a "Mensch." The Republicans in Congress will end up loving him as much as the Democrats. He will make a good buddy for all the members of Congress because he has tremendous compassion.

63. Actually, Franken did NOT challenge ... state law required a recount
Fortunately, I live in a state where there is a paper trail to recount and I am more than willing to take the time to get it as close to correct as possible (regardless of who eventually wins). Our set up and process (Minnesota) isn't perfect, but it's not bad and because of this case, there will continue to be improvements.

66. uhm
Minnesota state law REQUIRES a recount if the margin is that close. The only thing of substance that changed was that the ballots that had been disqualified without a reason being given were re-examined.

Coleman started out saying that it was over and that a recount was a waste of time and then later changed his tune to count everything. Al was consistant.

Let us try not to sympathize to much with the devil.

....this would be relatively minor news. But the obstructionist process the GOP put into action just shown a huge light on the whole thing. It looks like....and this is solely because of the GOP....that our 60 member super-majority was fought for hard and long and is well deserved.

Talk about backfiring GOP foolishness! All eyes are on their demise!

41. Will people stop calling him a COMEDIAN???
It was obvious that he ran a competent, serious campaign as a politician. He is now a senator. Can we please drop the "comedian" label?

You don't hear about "manure salesman-turned-Senator Tankerbell" or "child molester-turned-Representative Wankerman," do you? The only place where such a title is where the person is still in that profession, as in "comedian Rush Limbaugh."

44. I agree, mostly.
He's a Senator now and that should be all that matters.

However, I'm not prepared to concede that being a comedian (or a manure salesman, for that matter) is somehow shameful. It's only shameful if you're a bad one, like Limbaugh.

And isn't it usually Representative-turned-child molester and not the other way around? :)

49. It takes time to become a child molester.
Anyone who's been doing that in Congress has to have gotten a lot of practice before their political careers began. Child molesters are made, not born. And we can be proud that they're made in America - perhaps our only American-made product left.

Which means he can't have sexual affairs, or eat at fundraising dinners, or push the buttons to vote. So he's free to propagandize all his anti-sex-education talk, but he can't do anything about it. Hey...maybe Tankerbell could be an assistant to Limbaugh!

Franken took the oath on a Bible that belonged to the family of the late Sen. Paul Wellstone, D-Minn.

90. 60 Democrats with Al Franken! It is time to put the steamroller in gear and flatten the Republicans.
We have a clear shot at it now.

Supreme Court nominations? Bring them on.

Environmental Policy? Undo what the Bush Administration forced on us.

Health care, gay rights, tax breaks for the rich? The Democrats are on the job now, the Republicans will just have to sit and watch.
