176. Similar reflections
I've always felt the same at the loss of a relative or significant persons from my youth up to the present who depart.
I feel a piece of myself is taken and gone forever. Nice to know the same sentiment is felt by others.
Thanks for your post.

202. So true.
My family watched the CBS Evening News all through my childhood. He got me thinking journalism was an exciting and glamorous profession, bringing the news of the day to the public.

RIP and Godspeed, Mr. Cronkite. O8)

41. Yes... big lump in my throat and choking back the tears...
I know he lived fully and even in his 90s was sharp as a tack... He was a conscience to us in terms of the increasingly "flighty" state of news.

May he be at peace, but may others inspired by him step forward (and soon).

201. Maybe not sharp in his 90's
Cronkite died on July 17, 2009 at the age of 92 from cerebrovascular disease,<7> described by his son as complications from dementia.

His wiki How hard it must be to be Walter Cronkite's kid and watch him slip into dementia. I know it's hard for everyone's kids.

A wonderful space advocate, he left the regular evening news on CBS in 1981..and yet we still remember him, while so many others on evening news have been all but forgotten.

after Dan Rather was beaten to the ground by Daley's thugs. He came on in the middle of the night, after tv coverage wrapped up, and said exactly what he thought of that.

84. '68 Democratic Convention, yes...
and I cannot confirm this, but I am pretty sure I remember that at one point Walter, up in the booth, asked Dan Rather what the "thugs" roughing up Rather on the floor were saying to him. Rather told Walter that one of the cops or protesters or somebody "just advised me to have carnal knowledge of myself."

64. Needless to say, the Freepers are rejoicing heartily - and as nasty as can be.
No link from me. You can check it out yourself. Those of you who think we can deal with them as "human beings" are simply wrong.

They would kill all of us in an instant, if they could. I for one think they might be surprised to see that it wouldn't be easy.

Sorry I even went over there. Worse tonight than even their threads about how much they enjoy killing small animals.

With baseball bats.

80. Thanks, Uncle Walter, for coming into our homes every evening
Thanks for making sense of it all so we could understand and navigate better.

And thank you for Your Are There, The Twentieth Century, then the Twenty First Century. One show gave me a passion for history. One gave me a better understanding of my world by learning of other places, other people. One gave me a profound optimism for the future by helping me understand science and possibilities. There have not been better programs than those.

Thanks for the calm, steady voice that gave narrative to amazing years.

Thanks for explaining it all so well.

110. I often would think of how sad the current state of "journalism" must have
made him. When we were kids every journalist tried to be "the next Cronkite". Now they just try to out sensationalize Geraldo Rivera or Bill O'Reilly. I hope someday that class and respectability comes back into vogue.

104. A very sad day for the nation and world..........
I heard last week he was seriously ill and knew this day was not far off. I am truly saddened and actually teared up when I saw the news. What an icon of great journalism when news reporters and especially news anchors were professionals and not shills for their corporate masters.

Now let's see how much outpouring of emotion there is for this learned and powerful icon compared with the silly infantile response to Michael Jackson's death. As I have consistently said, MJ was a talented musician and entertainer but he was not a God. I feel Walter Cronkite had an equal if not more powerful impact on the nation with the quality of his reporting and later as a retired commentator, his insightful and poignant observations on current affairs.

Walter, God's speed to you. We will miss you and wish you a blessed eternity!!!

108. A Sailor's Prayer (Rod MacDonald) - for Walter
Though my sails be torn and tattered
And the mast be turned about
Let the night wind chill me to my very soul
Though the spray might sting my eyes
And the stars no light provide
Give me just another morning light to hold

And I will not lie me down
This rain a-ragin'
I will not lie me down
In such a storm
And if this night be unblessed
I shall not take my rest
Till I reach another shore

Though the only water left
Is but salt to wound my thirst
I will drink the rain that falls so steady down
And though night's blindness be my gift
And there be thieves upon my drift
I will praise this fog that shelters me along

And I will not lie me down
This rain a-ragin'
I will not lie me down
In such a storm
And if this night be unblessed
I shall not take my rest
Till I reach another shore

Though my mates by drained and weary
And believe their hopes are lost
There's no need for their bones on that blackened bottom
And though Death waits just off the bow
They shall not answer to him now
We shall stand to face the morning without him

And I will not lie me down
This rain a-ragin'
I will not lie me down
In such a storm
And if this night be unblessed
I shall not take my rest
Till I reach another shore

Safe passage, Walter. We miss you more than you will ever know.

141. My Walter Cronkite Story
I was a seven year old girl at the dinner table in Brooklyn. We were a huge Italian family, and three generations ate together regularly, usually 12 or more at the big table, with the "basement table" set up at the end for the children; many, many children. The discussion veered toward marriage and wound up at the kid's table, where each of us were quizzed on our hopes for future husbands and wives. My cousin Manny wanted to marry a girl like Marilyn Monroe, my cousin Lois wanted to marry George Harrison. Each choice was met with bewilderment by the elders, until they got to me. I said "I want to marry a man like Walter Cronkite!". Stunned silence was followed by an eruption of laughter and cheers. Walter Cronkite had just steered us through the assassination of JFK. Each of us at the table felt grateful for him. His steadfast, yet, emotional reporting helped us to sort it all out, to grieve, to try to make sense of it all. I adored him. My choice was deemed the wisest and I basked in the much coveted admiration of my elders, if only for that moment.

Mr. Cronkite. There will never be another like you ever again. This is truly a sad day for broadcast journalism (what is left of it, at least)
Hopefully, your legacy and your style will inspire some young and budding journalist out there to seek the truth and bring the real news.
I know I will never forget you sir. And I will do my damnedest to make sure you are known to generations yet to come.

You'll just have to redouble your efforts to encourage the impeachment of officials who aren't even in office while we take a moment.

Make sure and let us know how that works out for you, mmmkay?

the way they do.

Class.

What class.

I must talk about myself, him, and tv. I was born before tv so I watched all of newscasters. Yes that is what they were called. Today's young don't understand what older people observed. Most of my posts on DU are rants against the networks because I, like many, know how far they have fallen. They privatized our air waves and what you're seeing is not what it used to be.

Now we have war corporations owning the news. It wasn't perfect then and I'm sure there are texts and courses that have dissected the ways it wasn't fair, but it seemed fair. The newscasters and their stations displayed sensitivity towards people's differing positions.

When there were issues of choice - the networks and the papers would lay out the issues and give the pros and cons or even graph the issues. We were given both sides. I yearn for those days. We were educated, not brainwashed.

I think there are at least three posts a day on DU pointing out what can be called the latest atrocities of failed journalism. We know how bad it is in our bones. During the last two decades, it was used to help impeach a President for a sex lie. It was used to help steal four elections, It was used to create a Patriot Act and a pretend war for corporations and military advancement. It was used as the stomping grounds for think tank proselytizers and lobbyists and guest experts of the DOD and so called non-profit religious cults.

I yearn for those days. What happened is that we rose up to find the news for ourselves, to seek the truth and it has worked and is working.

I never knew what ranting was about until our criminal leaders allowed all the privatization. We have lost much.

Now we have lost him. I hope I will hear great stories about him and receive leads on what to stream.

I am going to be watching and listening for leads on comments he has made on the current state of tv news. The one thing I know is that when I hear his words I will acknowledge them as coming from a gentlemen. The way it used to be.

Thank you, Walter Cronkite.

but it still hurts to lose people you respect. RIP Walter and thoughts with the family. It's no tragedy when an old man dies, but certainly no celebration. But... at the very least Cronkite outlived the bastard McNamara, even if only by a week or so.

"Old anchormen, you see, don't fade away; they just keep coming back for more. And that's the way it is..."

You could have never been more right, good sir.
You will never be forgotten, you will never fade away. You will indeed keep coming back, in all your archived televised appearances; your radio reports on WWII and the Nuremberg Trials; your humane and righteous positions on faith, world peace, and ethics; your groundbreaking interviews from the commonest soldier to the leaders of the free world; your heart felt, emotional coverage of President Kennedy's death; your awe inspiring coverage of the first lunar landing that captured exactly how every American felt at that pinnacle moment; your booming yet genteel voice in countless narrations; and of course your gentlemanly persona, distinguished yet friendly face, and of course your kind heart and soul.

Yes, sir, you will never be forgotten; you will never fade away. As long as the legacy and the legend that was you, Walter Cronkite, remains alive and close to our hearts, there is still hope for us yet.

Keep coming back to us Mr. Cronkite, and never ever stop. Godspeed to you, sir. Godspeed.

203. His wiki is very interesting. Here's the link.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Cronkite

For one thing, CBS broke into a soap opera to announce President Kennedy had been shot THEN WENT BACK TO THE SOAP OPERA, INCLUDING A COMMERCIAL. That would never happen today. Then, when it seemed serious, they went back to Cronkite.

Also, the word "anchor" was apparently first used for a journalist to describe Cronkite's role at a political convention.

Fitting!

Some 14 months after I received my first permanent overseas posting, I was back in the States for something or other, and caught Walter Cronkite's final regularly scheduled broadcast. John Lennon was murdered somewhere around that time as well.

My immediate superior once paid some obscene amount of money in an auction to go have lunch with Cronkite at his vacation place on Martha's Vineyard (transportation NOT included!) some six or seven years ago. How I would have liked to have been able to tag along on THAT trip!

Helen Thomas is getting to be the last of that generation. I hope she'll be around for a good long time to come.

Who I really feel sorry for are the young DUers here who never saw him work. Back then we had REAL newspeople, not the all-style-and-no-substance types we have now. Cronkite and Dan Rather are credited with helping to hasten the end of of the Vietnam war, because they dared to show how things really were unlike the hollywood-ized nonsense that passes for war reporting today.

Rest in peace, Uncle Walter. Ya did good.

I graduated high school in 1960, Walter Cronkite was welcomed in our house every evening. If I remember correctly, the evening news was only 15 minutes, but I'm not sure about that. But we never missed the news with Mr. Cronkite. Remember watching the election of JFK with Walter. The assassinations, how Walter helped us to get through those days. The war in Vietnam. The 68 Democratic convention in Chicago. The riots, civil rights marches, anti-wat marches, Watergate, Moon landing, and so much more. He was honest, told the truth, and let you judge from the facts. He has been missed so much since he retired, true journalists are few and far between. God be with his family.

214. 92 year old man dies - is this really news?
Edited on Sat Jul-18-09 01:42 PM by bc3000
It looks like the second coming of the death of Michael Jackson on the cable news channels. When did the reporting of news become eulogy?

Sounds like a great man, but let's also acknowledge that one needs to be well over 40 years in age to have any first hand memory of this guy doing the news. He outlived most of his fan base.

Ask yourself this: How would Walter Cronkite have treated the death of an important and famous TV journalist? I'm guessing it would be a dignified, but short, mention at the end of the real news with a few complimentary words. I serious doubt Cronkite would have prescribed the multiple day 24 hour orgy of coverage we're going to be seeing.

223. Feel like another era of my life has passed
Grew up either watching Walter Cronkite or Huntley & Brinkley reporting the national news. From the sad days of JFK's assasination & funeral to the space launches at Cape Canaveral & the landings on the moon. The tense days of Apollo 13.

The civil rights marches with fire hoses & dogs being turned on the marchers.

The seemingly endless Vietnam War especially the siege of Khe Sanh to the helicopters lifting off from the American embassy & the chopppers being pushed off the decks of U.S. carriers. The murders of MLK & RFK. Watergate.

Walter Cronkite was the steadying voice of the nation.

I felt it was almost sacrilegeous for Faux News & even CNN to be reporting on the death of this great newsman last night.

RIP Uncle Walter & thank you.
