In changing sphere, Dean's Net fund-raising outdoes Cheney[by a long shot]
WASHINGTON -- Vice President Dick Cheney got up yesterday morning, boarded Air Force Two and flew to Columbia, S.C., where he rode in a motorcade to a private home, shook hands, and posed for pictures with 150 donors at a luncheon. There he raised $300,000 for the Bush-Cheney reelection committee before flying home.
Over four days ending last night, Howard Dean outdid the vice president -- without leaving his campaign headquarters in Burlington, Vt.

In a testament to the power of Internet fund-raising, and the intensity of the Democratic presidential contender's support, Dean raised $344,000 for his campaign by the time of the Cheney lunch. All Dean's staff did was tell their supporters about Cheney's event via the Internet and challenge them to surpass the vice president's total.

By 12:30 this morning, Dean's total stood at $507,150, with contributions from 9,500 people, the campaign said, adding that the counting was expected to continue overnight. The drive, which started late last Thursday, ended at midnight last night. For the Republican-held White House, it was more direct evidence of a fund-raising phenomenon that Dean's eight Democratic rivals witnessed last month, when the former Vermont governor posted the highest total of the group for the second quarter of the year, $7.6 million. In one day in late June, the campaign raised more than $800,000, much of it via the Internet. The latest cybertake had professionals shaking their heads.

1. I think they should keep track of what the PUBLIC has to pay
for these fundraisers.

Let's see.....Cheney cost the city where he raised his $300K about $150,000. Hmmmmmmm.

And Dean? I bet not one city council had to find some money to bankroll Dean's bid for $500,000. Not one dime.

Bush is coming to Portland in August, and we are bankrupt. I want to start a movement here to say, Hey, we'd love to have you (Not!), but we don't have a spare $200,000 to ensure your security!!

This is something to bring up in letters to the editor in local papers. ESPECIALLY small towns. LOTS of people get seriously pissed about those kinds of things when it's brought to their attention.
Hope you don't mind if I steal it and write one to the paper in my small city.

2. Every opportunity to humiliate Cheney should be embraced!
Notwithstaning the fact that this is so good for our side.

I have a dream of seeing Cheney behind bars. Maybe someday my dream will come true. I think there's a special chair in Hell reserved for that man.

4. Anyone seen Dean on his website?
Edited on Tue Jul-29-03 03:17 AM by tedoll78
He was sitting at a desk with a laptop eating a $3-a-plate turkey sandwich on wheat bread.. lol. He called it the best sandwich ever.

This campaign is maintaining its cleverness well :-)

Edit: A "turkey" sandwich.. not a "turket" sandwich!

5. Lots of creativity...
...the "people powered howard" is pretty corny, but it's apt. Much of what I've seen the Dean campaign do was initially brought up and discussed on the website (like the recent "Dean Team Outreach" where Dean Teams are donating to food pantries and doing community service and outreach). This is the first campaign I've been excited about in some time. Innovative, interactive, visionary...

By this time next year, it's my hope that Dean will not only be the nominee, but we the people will be actively changing the way politics works in this nation...

7. Joe Trippi is a genius
Maybe Dean himself is a genius. This is simply the most amazing campaign I have ever seen. The way that it makes you want to be a part of it can truly remake the electoral process. I have not enthusiatically embraced Dean as a candidate (I'm pretty cynical and worry about his past life as a fairly conservative guy) but I have already sent him money and the only out of stater that I have ever contributed to is Wellstone.
A question about matching funds--I know that individual contributions are matched only up to $250. Does that apply to the whole primary season or just each reporting period?

8. $250 per quarter, up to $1000 for the primary season.
And an additional $1000 for the general election.

19. It was increased to $2,000 for the primary season and $2,000 more for
the general election in the Campaign Finance Reform bill.

...
The final version of the bill, however, included a provision opposed by the UAW: an increase from $1,000 to $2,000 in the limit for “hard money” contributions by individuals to candidates for the House, Senate and president. Under the new rules, an individual could donate a maximum of $95,000 to candidates and political parties during a two-year election cycle.

13. why are no Dems screaming about the misuse of Gov't property?
Didn't the GOP throw a hissy fit about Gore making campaign calls from his office ?

Jeezus Jiminy, Cheney's using AF2, a motorcade, and Shrubbie's using Marine 1 and whatever other carrier, etc to raise money.

Talk about impropriety ?!?!?!?

Dean or Green is fast becoming my motto because of the underhanded bullshit being pulled by the DLC.
