Seventeen die in Iran plane blaze
Source: BBC

A passenger plane has burst into flames on landing at an airport in northern Iran, killing 17 passengers, state media has reported.

The burning plane skidded off the runway of the airport in the city of Mashhad, said the IRNA news agency.

Provincial official Ghahraman Rashid said another 19 people had been injured in the incident and the remaining passengers were evacuated.

The crash comes 10 days after another Iranian plane crash killed 168 people.

The Aria Airlines plane involved in Friday's blaze had flown from Tehran to Mashhad with 153 people on board.

1. Is it my imagination, or are there suddenly a lot more airplane incidents?
There have been four or five major crashes in the last few months. Lapsed standards? What's causing all this?

2. We had a near miss here a few weeks ago.
Our daily BA flight from Phoenix to Heathrow caught fire just before take-off.

Everyone evacuated on the slides, and escaped with only bumps, scrapes & bruises.

Still, pretty scary.

(No one I knew was on the plane, but that flight has been used by my husband, sister & other friends & family as it's the only non-stop flight to Europe from PHX).

3. The U.S. sanctions against Iran prevent them from getting civilian aircraft parts.
That is why their planes are crashing and ordinary people are dying by the plane load.

Thank the War for more Terror for all of that.

4. Don't construe this as an endorsement of sanctions
but can they only get plane parts from the US? Can't they get them from France, or Russia?

5. Russian planes are really part of the problem, not any solution.
France is on board with whatever EU sanctions are in place.

But the real message here is that regular people die because of the Right Wing's bizarre, Orwellian "war." They should be able to get civilian aircraft parts like everyone else should. They shouldn't have to die as a result of some Right Winger's xenophobic, hate-mongering wet dream.

(CNN) -- A passenger plane skidded off an airport runway and burst into flames in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad on Friday, killing at least 17 people and injuring about 20, according to government-backed Press TV.
Aryan Airlines Flight 1625 skid off the runway and burst into flames Friday in Mashhad, Iran.

Aryan Airlines Flight 1625 skid off the runway and burst into flames Friday in Mashhad, Iran.

There were 150 passengers on board Aryan Airlines Flight 1625, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency, or IRNA. There was no immediate information on the number of crew.

An Iranian official said those aboard had been evacuated.

Ghahraman Rashid, deputy governor-general of Khorasan province, said the plane had flown from Tehran, IRNA reported.

On edit: changed title per mod request

This may be nothing, but I found it odd that all searches relating to this story are for ARIA Airlines. Aryan Airlines is a cargo service, not passenger. Was this a snafu, or do we have supremacists at CNN? Does anyone know how to say Aria in Iranian context?

On edit: The picture in the story clearly shows ARIA Airlines, and not Aryan Cargo Airlines.

7. They might translate to the same word in Farsi
The word 'Aryan' is related to the farsi 'arya', which I believe was the language of the Aryans, who were Indo-Iranian.

17. Off-topic yet neat...
The term goes back far enough that "Ireland" (well, "Eire") and "Iran" come directly from the same root.

This planet's more connected than people think sometimes.

10. I thought Aryan Air was an Indian firm.
Aryan is not an uncommon name in India--nothing to do with Hitler and all that.

11. I was referring to the story on CNN
I was referring to the story on CNN, and the fact that the entry person entered Aryan. Like I said, probably nothing. Just found it odd when the picture shows Aria Airlines.

12. That was why I think it was a mistake--the airline exists, it's just not Iranian.
It's in greater asia, though....in a country that begins with "I."

13. "Arian" or "Aryan" is derived from the Latin word for "Iran".
"As an adaptation of the Latin Arianus, referring to Iran, 'Aryan' has "long been in English language use".

14. But do a search....
Do a search for Aria Airlines vs. Iran Airlines. I concede to your explanation though.

15. It could be an acronym as per post #2
A.R.I.A = Aryan Republic Iran Airlines...

So you're right in the sense that it isn't just "Aryan Airlines".

(I thought it's interesting that "Aryan" actually means "Iranian"!)
