Frist draws GOP fire for handling of gun bill
By Geoff Earle

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist
(R-Tenn.) came under fire from a fellow
Republican Tuesday who faulted him
for his handling of a gun liability bill.

The bill was soundly defeated after a
series of procedural moves by
Democrats on the day their presidential
standard-bearer returned from the
campaign trail.

"It was not our finest hour," freshman
Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) said of the
controversial bill. It was defeated 90-8
after Democrats successfully added
amendments to extend the
assault-weapons ban and close the
so-called gun show "loophole" and its
chief sponsor turned against his own
bill.

"To me, looks like the whip count
would have shown you're going to lose
certain amendments," Graham said. "I'
ve found myself in awkward positions
before, but it's awkward to vote your
own bill down."

1. Wow, those poor Republican fellers just can't catch a break!
There's more whining per inch in this article than legally allowed!

Poor, poor things. :nopity:

They may have to claim they have found some more paper pulp ricin in another letter to Frist to cheer themselves up again.

pretty scarey

2. Lindsay Graham's existence is an "awkward position..."
...if you know what I mean. Maybe he wouldn't feel so awkward if he were honest with himself.

4. how do you figure?
The net result is that Kerry got his picture taken with Feinstien, Schumer, and Kennedy after an anti-gun vote, while Kerry is giving a big "thumbs up" sign. This will play well in the Northeast and California, but will anger many people in much of the rest of the country.

There are 100 million legal gun owners in the US, all of whom, by definition, can vote. How many people voted in the last election? Is that the demographic you REALLY want to get pissed at you?

On top of that, it looks like the AW ban IS going to sunset in September. How is that a victory?

8. Who are you kidding, refill?
A majority of gun owners want assault weapons off the street and the gun show lophole closed. The only people opposed are fringe Tim McVeigh wannabes and those who work in the gun industry.

oh, yeah, sorry, I forgot, we got our asses handed to us in Congress over that...

How many MORE seats are you willing to cede to the Republicans over this STUPID issue?

11. Who are YOU kidding
Gun owners know the AW ban is BS. It's literally only cosmetic. I can get a post-ban AR15 that shoots just the same as a pre-ban only it won't have a working flash suppressor or a bayonet lug. All the AW ban has done is raise prices for AR15s and made cosmetic changes. Remember this ban isn't banning fully automatic weapons that fire like "machine guns". Those have been strictly licensed since the 30's.

Neither has it nor can it get AW's off the street. Why do you think criminals will suddenly obey a law? If a dealer can get in the country do you really think he can;t get a REAL assault weapon in--one that's fully automatic. All gun laws do is make it harder for law abiding citizens to get guns.

Also note that when England banned most guns, gun went up dramatically--almost or above 100%

And remember as other posters have noted, gun control whacked Democrats in 2000. Face it, most Americans oppose gun control.

12. Catch A Clue
Do you think Kerry and Edwards would have pulled off the campaign trail and conspicuously showed up in D.C. to cast "anti-gun" votes if they or their handlers thought there was any political downside to it?

And I'd a damned sight rather have my picture taken with Diane Feinstein than an NRA toady "democrat" like Zell Miller......

13. How about Robert Byrd?
He's generally pro-gun. Is he also a "NRA toady"?

I think Kerry's BADLY out of touch on the gun issue with a lot of the country. Gun control plays well in the northeast and California. It's the kiss of death in the rest of the country.
