Nashville anti-health care reform protest a bust (1 person shows up)

NASHVILLE — The leader of a Tennessee group opposing the Obama administration’s health care reform plan said today he’s disappointed he was the only one who showed up for a protest in Nashville.

Tom Kovach, state director of America’s Independent Party, said he’d hoped to see at least 50 people at the protest in a parking lot in front of West End Middle School near downtown.

Instead, the only company he had was a hand full of reporters and a few passing joggers.

Kovach acknowledged that today was school students’ first day back and that protesters may have wanted to be ‘‘cautious,’’ considering the group was criticized for protesting near the school.

7. I don't think they have staying power

Unlike the war protests I've been going to for the last seven years (and maybe it's time for another big demonstration in the streets), I don't think the screamers really have the belly for the full ride. They'll throw a couple of tantrums, get a little press, and go home. You won't be seeing any signs saying "I can't believe we're still protesting against this!" like you do at the anti-war rallies.

9. The Rest of the (Idiototic) Story

Rep. Jim Cooper was due to address the middle school assembly of kids and parents on the first day of school, and the tea baggers got it into their heads that it was going to be a Town Meeting or something, and announced they were going to protest.

Cooper pulled out to keep the first day of school from turning into a cluster fuck for these people, which I think was a spineless thing to do, frankly. The Tea Baggers announced they were going to protest, anyway.

15. We have a health care townhall in rural Tn about 1 hr out of Nashville

They are going to hold it in a place that is small. I already called to find out if you need tickets. But no one answered. I even went to visit the congressman's office. We thought we had an appointment with him last week. We got confirmation for the appointment but when we went to the office we showed the secretary what we got and she said she wasn't familiar with the form but she would send it to the congressman in DC. I told her that I would like an answer from someone. Haven't heard anything yet.

Tennessee Democratic Party chairman Chip Forrester questioned why Kovach would even be near a school considering he was fired from a Metro public school and charged with assaulting a student.

‘‘It’s just another example of the judgment he displayed,’’ Forrester said.

However, in the assault case, Kovach said that he was the victim.

‘‘The person who should have been charged with assault was the student, who tried to slap me in the face,’’ Kovach said.

Now, had it been a bit cooler and with a "name" such as Joe Wurlitzerburger or however it is styled, some may have dropped by at lunch, but in the long run, just not very much a Baggerville. WTF is the American Party? Isn't that what George Wallace ran on once? Before his public mea culpae?
