Lieberman: ‘There’s No Reason’ To Deal With The Uninsured Until After The Recession

Last week, Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY), the most conservative member of the so-called bipartisan “Gang of Six” working on the Senate Finance Committee’s health care bill, stated that he preferred that Congress deal with reform incrementally. “I think the only way it will happen is we need to break it down into smaller parts than we have now and put it through one at a time,” he said.

Today on CNN, Sen. Joe Lieberman (CT), an Independent who caucuses with the Democrats, embraced Enzi’s idea. “Great changes in our country often have come in steps. The Civil Rights movement occurred, changes occurred in steps,” he argued. Lieberman added that Congress should address the nearly 50 million uninsured at some point down the road:

*****LIEBERMAN: Morally, everyone of us would like to cover every American with health insurance but that’s where you spend most of the trillion dollars plus, or a little less that is estimated, the estimate said this health care plan will cost. And I’m afraid we’ve got to think about putting a lot of that off until the economy is out of recession. There’s no reason we have to do it all now.

The Dems dumped him last election. What we need is a stronger farm system. Who are the future Progressive representatives and senators? The trouble is with Rahm's thinking, if he wears your jersey, he's on your team, whether or not he plays for you. A small Progressive party with some fighters would be a whole lot better than the 56 pussies in the 58 vote Democratic majority we have now. Lay down with blue dogs wake up with your majority fleeing, My Democratic Senator Kerry's staff tells me the senator thinks single payer is the best approach, but that pussy wont stand up for what he thinks is best, the same for my congressman Neil. So I got two Democrats who say single payer is best, but act like America isn't worth the best. I am so ready for choice.

The same reason it's a good time to start a business (assuming you've calculated properly on what will be hot post recession.)

Joe Lieberman has turned out to be quite the disappointment - I really can't distinguish him from Republicans at this point. Really, if he's not with us Dems on the issue of the day, then he's just not a Democrat.

I have been aware of him for a very long time, as I followed the Dukakis-Bush election very closely all the way from here (needless to say, I was very disappointed by the outcome of that), and in that context also got news about some of the other contests. I remember that Lieberman was actually to the right of his Republican opponent.

If they have that much lying around, they can find the money to take care of their own citizens; any thing less reflects wrong-headed priorities and an abrogation of duty as outlined in our founding documents.

Other countries don't seem to spend as much money on killing people as they do taking care of their own population. Sure wish we did that too.

We still had rationing of food and clothes, FFS. If people consider health care as a priority, they'll establish it.

It's even *more* important in a recession, as fewer people have job-related insurance.

56. Has this FUCK read the proposed legislation?
Based on what I know the provisions in these bills will be introduced over a number of years out to the year 2013 if I recall correctly. If we aren't out of the recession by then we have much bigger problems than health care to deal with.

This is just another "kick the can down the street" argument. Obstructionists will always find a reason for delaying significant change. Joe LIEberman, you are a sorry excuse for someone who caucuses with the Democrats.

Tell the millions of uninsured to wait... many of these same individuals are those that are looking for work or have given up in the Bush economy (remember how you embraced that fuck of evil in 2004?). These are people who have lost their homes and their futures.

How smugly you can sit with your guaranteed huge Senate retirement check and lifetime health benefits.

60. Holy Joe had legions of defenders in DU. The Left was never fooled by this POS.
I wish Alec Baldwin would change his mind and runs against Holy Joe, even if the Israel Lobby goes to bat for Holy Joe as they did the last time.

Lieberman To Alec Baldwin: "Make My Day" And Run Against Me (VIDEO)

Senator Joseph Lieberman said on Sunday that he was more than ready to take on an election challenge from 30 Rock star and longtime Democratic activist Alec Baldwin.

"Make my day," the Connecticut independent told CNN's "State of the Union." "I respect Alec Baldwin as an actor and as a comedian, and if he wants to run, that's his right."

A Baldwin-Lieberman match-up would draw an intense amount of political attention, instantaneously becoming the most-watched Senate race of the cycle. But the showdown wouldn't come until 2012. And while Baldwin has hinted his desire to boot Lieberman from Congress -- "I have no use for him," he told Playboy Magazine -- he's also declared that he's not running.

"Lastly, no I am not moving to Connecticut to run against Joe Lieberman," Baldwin wrote in a July column for the Huffington Post. "As much as I think Lieberman is an enormous letdown to the party that gave him their nomination for vice president, I am sure that Democratic Party leaders in that state will take care of themselves."

due to reform being put off until after the 2010 elections.,

Then, his mission of sabotaging the Democratic Party will be partially complete, and he can get to work on getting another republican in the WH in 2012, as well as helping republicans regain control of Congress.

Joe knows that if Dems succeed in reforming helath care soon, republicans will be the minority party for decades to come, and leave him even more angry and bitter than he already is.

154. Can everyone please postpone disease and illness until we're out of the recession?
That way, Lieberman can enjoy his government run health care plan and not have a guilty conscience.

Seriously, I despise this self-indulgent hack. How dare he suggest that the sick and uninsured need to wait on the economy improving. Unbelievable.

158. Here's an idea:
can we find some people in CT who are struggling without insurance and have them start telling their stories to the media and to Lieberman's office?

I can just see the story now, and it wouldn't make things easy for Lieberman.

168. traitor joe....
....you never seem to disappoint....joe, maybe you and your puke buddy, mikey, should ask someone without insurance, in desperate need of healthcare, if they would like to wait until after the recession for much needed medical attention....or to receive much needed medical attention incrementally....

....you're a worthless piece of crap....as Americans joe, we must all start from the position that EVERY AMERICAN needs and deserves decent healthcare and the right to live....

....then we, as Americans joe, must find the will and the way to pay for it....it's the right to do joe, it's the only thing to do....a 100 billion a year or a trillion dollars over ten years is chump change, and you know it....the time has come joe, we've waited long enough....

....I'm curious joe, did you and your puke friends invade Iraq incrementally? Do you support your beloved Israel incrementally? Did you shower your puke friends in big banking and on wall street with trillions of our tax dollars incrementally? Didn't you and your friends piss away a trillion in one week last fall?

....instead of trying to put more innocent Americans into an early grave, maybe you should spend your time and energy thinking of ways to save the lives of Americans; fellow citizens of the country you claim to love....

....the money is there, joe, that's why we're paying like you to find it.

174. No reason at all, Joe,
if you believe 18,000 deaths a year from lack of insurance is not a reason - if you don't care that people are dying at a greater rate than in wars from lack of health care - if it's unconcerning that Americans actually receiving health care are filing bankruptcy in record numbers. What a total and complete and uncaring asshole.

181. They are all shills to the insurance industry!!!
If this video doesn't get people to see the true agenda of Fox News, I don't know if anything will. Neil Cavuto basically says Obama's moral obligation should be protecting America's wealth, not the health of all Americans.

These people are unbelievable.

188. Our totally dysfunctional health care "system" is a large part of the adverse dynamics
leading to our national economic woes.

Straighten health care reform out properly ie: universal single payer health coverage or at the very least a strong public option and the economy will come back much stronger based on solid fundamental bedrock principles instead of the current dysfunctional shifting sand foundation of which for profit "health" coverage and in the turn the American economy is built on.

For profit "health" coverage; is immoral, inefficient, and so dysfunctional as to be an ongoing ever increasing catastrophic drag on the American Peoples' health and their finances.

The very concept of any civilized nation; allowing an industry having nothing to do with health care, to profit from it's citizens' illness and injury thereby leeching precious health care dollars away from the peoples health care borders on insanity from a conscientious and national economic perspective.

Thanks for the thread, kpete.

189. Totally illogical argument by Liebernan
Health care will be with us during recessions, booms, busts and everything in between. When we start the process should have nothing to do with the state of the economy.

Strike while the iron's hot.
