Calls for Boycott of Scottish goods over bomber release
Source: BBC

Calls for a boycott of Scottish goods have been made in the US following the controversial decision to release the man convicted of carrying out the Lockerbie bombing.

A website urging Americans to "Boycott Scotland" has been set up featuring a list of e-mail addresses for prominent Scottish and UK politicians, as well as contact details for Scottish newspapers and a list of Scottish products and companies. The site accuses the Scottish and UK governments of committing a "flagrant betrayal" by releasing Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi.

Grassroots campaigns were also taking hold on social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, while calls have even been made to have Scotch whisky renamed as Freedom Liquor.

Tourist body VisitScotland said it had received e-mails from Americans pledging to cancel holidays in Scotland.

4. The government is a bit red faced over it if BBCA is to be believed
Apparently this was entirely a judicial decision that wasn't run past the government wonks, at all.

If they'd waited a few weeks until the guy had to be shipped home on a gurney, there probably wouldn't be as much foofaraw over it. As it is, even his having to be helped off the plane with a guy under each armpit, people are perceiving him as being still healthy enough to be a threat as well as providing Libya with happy horseshit propaganda.

The latter is the really unfortunate part, especially for Libya, now seen as giving a hero's welcome to a mass murderer.

14. I think he will, he's not looking too good
and I'm guessing he's got mets to the liver.

I have no problem with the compassionate release in this case, especially for the man's family.

I think Libya seriously miscalculated by giving this guy a hero's welcome. Gaddafi had just begun to deodorize them internationally. They now stink again.

released from an unjust incarceration.

They don't believe he is guilty, just like a lot of people on this side of the world don't believe the man is guilty.

Why was the media not 'mingling' in the crowd of young men asking those "man on the street" opinion polling questions of the alleged mastermind and their thought on why he was released?

lol

of course not! Gaddaffy organized the crowd to appear and controls the media in a Kim Jong Ill sort of way also .

81. Good analysis
The case against him was seriously flawed, with more flaws about to be released.

Was the guy guilty? We'll never know for sure. But he wouldn't have remained in jail long anyways. There are still standards of proof that are required in Scottish courts.

But yes, the political optics are bad.

17. One of the stories I scanned over the weekend was
about a piece of evidence that didn't fit. It was some kind of chip that didn't match up with what the government said it was supposed to be -- made out of the wrong material and the wrong color. And the expert that would have testified was marginalized. It came out on Saturday and no, I don't have the link. There were two or three threads that ran it down between Friday and Saturday but this thread was in GD.

15. Not a matter of conspiracy
Simply that it's known that evidence was witheld at the trial and there were issues with the forensic evidence too.

His appeal was delayed due to one of the judges being off sick and in the meanwhile he withdrew his appeal. There seems to be little doubt that if the appeal had been allowed a miscarriage of justice would have been ruled and he'd then have been set free immediately from the court.

The only conspiracy, if any , would relate to why to withdrew his appeal.

25. The proper forum for this evidence to be presented is a court of law.
Otherwise, its nothing more than allegations and speculation.

To say that he there is little doubt he would have ben set free on appeal due to a miscarriage of justice is speculation on your part. It might have happened or it might not have, but we will never know because the appeal was withdrawn.

There have been accusations that he was released to facilitate an oil deal. I'd like to know more about that.

59. Thanks for that report. It was interesting and troubling.
But I still believe the evidence should have been aired in a court of law through the appeals process. The UN report underscores the need for an appeal in this case and, in fact, recommends it. I'd like to know more about why the appeal was withdrawn but from I can gather it was dropped to clear the way for his release on compassionate grounds.

88. Did re-naming French Fries Freedom Fries make them any less Belgian?
RW jingoism requires no logic or accuracy. In fact, logic and accuracy may be detrimental to RW jingoism.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_fries

"Belgium
Belgian historian Jo Gerard recounts that potatoes were already fried in 1680 in the Spanish Netherlands, in the area of "the Meuse valley between Dinant and Liège, Belgium. The poor inhabitants of this region allegedly had the custom of accompanying their meals with small fried fish, but when the river was frozen and they were unable to fish, they cut potatoes lengthwise and fried them in oil to accompany their meals."<12><13><14><15>

A Belgian legend claims that the term "French" was introduced when British or American soldiers arrived in Belgium during World War I, and consequently tasted Belgian fries. They supposedly called them "French", as it was the official language of the Belgian Army at that time.<15>

Whether or not Belgians invented them, "frites" became the national snack and a substantial part of both national dishes, making the Belgians their largest per capita consumers in Europe and their symbolic creators.

France
Many Americans attribute the dish to France — although in France they are almost exclusively thought of as Belgian — and offer as evidence a notation by U.S. President Thomas Jefferson. "Pommes de terre frites à cru, en petites tranches" ("Potatoes deep-fried while raw, in small cuttings") in a manuscript in Thomas Jefferson's hand (circa 1801-1809) and the recipe almost certainly comes from his French chef, Honoré Julien.<4> In addition, from 1813<16> on, recipes for what can be described as french fries, occur in popular American cookbooks. By the late 1850s, one of these mentions the term "French fried potatoes".<17>

Recipes for fried potatoes (not clearly specified how) in French cookbooks date back at least to Menon's Les soupers de la cour (1755). It is true that eating potatoes was promoted in France by Parmentier, but he did not mention fried potatoes in particular. In France, they are called "pommes de terres frites" , "pommes frites" or more simply (and commonly) 'frites.'"

and i went to that link and i didn't see "right-wingery". i saw a website advocating a position that has nothing to do with political partisanship.

i'm disgusted that scotland released him fwiw. i'm not about to boycott scottish goods. my understanding is that the VAST majority of scots opposed the release ( i heard a blurb on the news to this effect ) .

i do think it was an awful decision.

30. I don't know about the vast majority being outraged
From listening to, and reading the opinions of, the average man/woman on the street, I'd say it's more like 50/50. In my own circle of friends and family, it's more like 60/40 in favour of, or neutral to, his release. It's funny, the people I know that are ok with al-Megrahi's release are the ones who paid close attention to the events leading up to, during, and after the trial. The ones 'outraged' are the headline readers; the ones who form their opinions from the front pages of the tabloids.

90. I can show a UK-wide poll; opinion is divided
with the more liberal Lib Dems tending more towards approval of the release. Most think this will damage the image of the SNP (whether or not they agree with it themselves); a plurality think the conviction was unsound.

There weren't enough people polled to pull out Scottish opinions; but the SNP has been more likely to agree with the Lib Dems on policy in areas like justice than with the Tories or Labour; my guess is the decision will have been slightly more popular in Scotland than in the UK overall.

It's using the exact same arguments made by the British Conservative party to make a case for a boycott which even they would find very daft. It's certainly worth noting that the UK press they encourage contacting are all right wing. No encouragement to contact leftie papers such as the Guardian or the Mirror for some reason.

As to public opinion over here, I think overall it's pretty much opposed to the Scottish government's decision round where I am. However, I'm in England and I'm not sure how badly this is going down in Scotland.

40. The Haggis of Private McPhee

http://www.robertwservice.com/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=175

"Hae ye heard whit ma auld mither's postit tae me?
It fair maks me hamesick," says Private McPhee.
"And whit did she send ye?" says Private McPhun,
As he cockit his rifle and bleezed at a Hun.
"A haggis! A HAGGIS!" says Private McPhee;
"The brawest big haggis I ever did see.
And think! it's the morn when fond memory turns
Tae haggis and whuskey -- the Birthday o' Burns.
We maun find a dram; then we'll ca' in the rest
O' the lads, and we'll hae a Burns' Nicht wi' the best."

"Be ready at sundoon," snapped Sergeant McCole;
"I want you two men for the List'nin' Patrol."
Then Private McPhee looked at Private McPhun:
"I'm thinkin', ma lad, we're confoundedly done."
Then Private McPhun looked at Private McPhee:
"I'm thinkin' auld chap, it's a' aff wi' oor spree."
But up spoke their crony, wee Wullie McNair:
"Jist lea' yer braw haggis for me tae prepare;
And as for the dram, if I search the camp roun',
We maun hae a drappie tae jist haud it doon.
Sae rin, lads, and think, though the nicht it be black,
O' the haggis that's waitin' ye when ye get back."

--snip--

"They're baith sairly woundit, but is it no droll
Hoo they rave aboot haggis?" says Sergeant McCole.
When hirplin alang comes wee Wullie McNair,
And they a' wonnert why he wis greetin' sae sair.
And he says: "I'd jist liftit it oot o' the pot,
And there it lay steamin' and savoury hot,
When sudden I dooked at the fleech o' a shell,
And it -- dropped on the haggis and dinged it tae hell."

And oh but the lads were fair taken aback;
Then sudden the order wis passed tae attack,
And up from the trenches like lions they leapt,
And on through the nicht like a torrent they swept.
On, on, wi' their bayonets thirstin' before!
On, on tae the foe wi' a rush and a roar!
And wild to the welkin their battle-cry rang,
And doon on the Boches like tigers they sprang:
And there wisna a man but had death in his ee,
For he thocht o' the haggis o' Private McPhee.

I always liked the taste of White Castle "sliders" after a bunch of beers. I'll have to keep haggis in mind, if I ever get that hammered again.

:hi:

It's best when covered liberally with worcestershire sauce, or Henderson's Relish if you can get hold of some!

96. Me either! Of course, I never ate it before, either. I cannot, however, take a pledge on
Scottish cashmere. After all, I may win the lottery someday and actually be able to afford it. And kilts are cute.

Bottom line: Whether or not this guy did it, Scotland would have to something a lot worse than release a dying man to his family before I'd boycott Scottish goods.

I will, however, boycott Scotch. Never liked the taste and I rarely drink alcholic beverages of any kind

The SCOTTISH residents of Lockerbie engaged in commendable and heroic efforts to locate potential survivors, help families of the bereaved and lend personal assistance wherever they could through the compassion, generosity and goodness of their heats

LETS BOYCOTT THEM ANYWAY:eyes:

I'm guessing also that if the right-wingers involved are the ones who are going to be cancelling their trips to Scotland in protest, the Scottish people will be breathing a tremendous sigh of relief not to have these bloviating pieces of crap pollute their beautiful country

FWIW I was horrified and appalled at the decision to release Megrahi and feel immense compassion, sympathy and empathy for the families and friends of the victims. This is a real travesty of justice. I just don't like the right-wingers exploiting tragedy for their own gain but there's nothing new in that, I guess. I would not like my country to be punished the actions of our former Prime Minister nor I'm guessing would most Americans here like to be punished for the actions of a certain former pResident

70. I meant the jerks in the U.S. who call for us to boycott other countries
because a sovereign nation dares to make a decision with clearing it with the U.S. first. :sarcasm:

They never stop to think that we pull any awful lot of crap that shoutld result in us being boycotted. ("From now on American cheese will be Freedom Cheese" - somehow I just can't imagine that being said in Europe).

The "you're kidding" was more rhetorical.

63. This is the stupidest, most offensive thing I've heard in a long time.
11 people in Lockerbie were killed by plane parts falling on them.

The rest of the town spent weeks picking body parts out of their lawns and making tea for distraught American relatives coming to pick up remains. There's absolutely heart-wrenching stories of the extent to which the Scots went out of their way to support the victims' families.

They have as many grievances against the bombers as anyone else. They caught one of the bombers, they imprisoned him for years at their expense, they have as much right as anyone to determine when and if he should be set free.

To boycott Scotland (one of the victims of the attack) for setting the perpetrator free is incredibly ignorant and tacky.

the people of scotland didnt want to let this guy go, this was a decision that was made behind closed doors and its pissed of a lot of people. I am all for US citizens calling and writing to scottish institutions and condemning the desicion, its the only way the powers at B will give any answers. 100. Thousands of deals like this are made in our criminal justice system daily..
Edited on Tue Aug-25-09 05:57 AM by No Elephants
Sometimes a copped plea or a parole decision, etc. infuriates people, but there is nothing nefarious about it, as "behind closed doors" might imply.

Usually, those kinds of decisions are based on the fact that prosecutorial, judicial and prison resources are not infinite and/or that the prosecution's case is weak. In this case, if it appeared that the prosecution might lose on appeal, it would have been an international stink for Scotland, much worse than typically occurs with a domestic criminal

Not the slightest combined slap on the wrist between them, to be the best of my knowledge. I don't recall any huhbub about gorillas in our midst such as Posada, but that's just me getting naive here.....

Ahmad Jibril thought himself to be persecuted for the event even before anybody knew anything (much as I like the guy, greeting accusations before they are made just looks weird and a wee bit suspicious), renowned boy scout Abu Nidal was also considered if I do recall correctly.
