Good news for Obama: New CNN poll shows viewers liked speech
Source: Kansas City Star

A post-speech CNN poll came up with some positive findings for President Obama:
77 percent had a very positive or somewhat positive reaction to his health-care speech (56 percent were "very positive")
70 percent said the policies Obama is proposing will move the country in the right direction.
67 percent said they favored Obama's plan to reform health care. 29 percent oppose it.
Asked how likely it is that Congress will pass most of his proposals, 75 percent said it was "very likely" or "somewhat likely."

OK, it was a really small poll but it gave an indication of how the blue dog Democrats in Congress might go. They were spooked by the town hall vitriol so this may settle their nerves.

67-29 in favor of Obama's plan. Will the talking chuckleheads focus their attention on the 67 or the 29? Think, think.

5. CNN Poll: Double-digit post-speech jump for Obama plan
Source: CNN.com

Two out of three Americans who watched President Barack Obama's health care reform speech Wednesday night favor his health care plans — a 14-point gain among speech-watchers, according to a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation national poll of people who tuned into Obama's address Wednesday night to a joint session of Congress.

That's what happens when the President takes control of the debate. He was marvelous last night.

6. He was marvelous
I think, maybe, we had to let the Rs show themselves for what they are. The contrast is so stark now. And thanks to Joe Wilson for acting like the a-hole the rest of them are.

Headline on Yahoo today "The Right's Defining Moment."

7. He was in kick ass mode last night
He put it out there and told Congress and the American people what he expected and it shows in polls.

He showed everyone he is for real, regardless of what the talking heads say.

They will have to work double time now to lower those numbers. Each time he rises up, it will be little tougher for them to drag him back down.

8. He is a brilliant orator.
And that's tragic, in this instance. The plan the President outlined SUX. I would prefer he do nothing than to foist that plan on us, and yet most people I have talked to so far are saying they loved the speech.

Evidently, brilliant oratory goes a long way. If the President has managed to sell this turd to the left, I see very little hope for this country.

13. I'm not surprised that some people feel that way
I've spent enough time on DU in the last few years to know the spots in the speech last night that were making people's heads explode.

17. So let me
guess, it's those of us who are in the majority who are the ones with a problem because we liked the plan?

And the minority who didn't are the ones who are absolutely right about the plan sucking?

Please, he laid it out last night. But of course, as was expected, nothing he said was going to be good enough for some.

23. This is not a team sport. I don't need for the President to "win."
Edited on Thu Sep-10-09 12:11 PM by Laelth
I want him to sign good legislation into law. The plan he outlined last night, in my opinion, is bad legislation. It will do more harm than good.

I blame the Democratic Party, mainly. We had a chance to pass meaningful reform. Instead, because it looks like a significant number of our representatives have sold out to corporate interests, we are going to get a massive Federal bail-out of the health insurance cabal paid for, principally, on the backs of the struggling middle class.

I don't blame you for that, but I do blame the President (now that he has actually owned this abysmal plan) and the Democratic Party (for selling us out).

24. Where does Anthony Weiner stand on the president's plan?
Edited on Thu Sep-10-09 12:30 PM by Doremus
A couple of weeks ago he said he would be supportive of a public plan even if it wasn't single payer.

Off to google....

eta

Found this:

He made the strongest argument yet on the public plan," said Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn, Queens), who supports the "public option" and has been one of Obama's biggest critics in recent days.

"He didn't make a blood oath, but I'm convinced he gets it," Weiner added.

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2009/09/10/2009-09-10_president_obama_scored_points_dems_say_but_didnt_change_minds.html

I'll take it as a good sign that Anthony Weiner is still hopeful.

26. That's the real question. What will the Progressive Caucus do?
Odds are, they will cave, and vote for a plan they all think is terrible just to give the President a "win."

I certainly hope that's not what happens, but only time will tell.

Of course he doesn't speak for all progressives, but I'll be watching him closely in the coming weeks. If he says it's a good bill, it's a good bill.

25. It's better than
having to watch our election be stolen again then having to wait another 8-12 years for someone with the courage to take this on again.

Sorry, but my family just cannot wait this long for no reform. If the repukes get control again that is exactly what will happen.

28. Yeah, it totally SUX that people who don't have health care now will have it
and it totally SUX that it will now be ILLEGAL for insurance companies to DENY coverage for those with pre-existing conditions.

and it totally SUX that it will now be ILLEGAL for insurance companies to KICK SOMEONE OUT OF THEIR PLAN just for GETTING SICK.

we would have been better off doing nothing. we're all gonna die anyway so what difference does it make??

29. Nobody's going to get health care as a result of this bill.
Lots of people are going to be forced to buy insurance, however, that they probably can't use because they can't afford the co-pays.

Lots of people will deeply resent being forced to buy piss-poor insurance. They will rightly blame the Democratic Party for it, and we will have driven away millions of supporters.

Is it worth that cost to pass this weak-kneed bill? I don't think so.

Feel free to ignore this warning at your peril.

35. Unfortunately, the democrats are not united on what the health care bill should contain.
because of this, we will be lucky just to get SOMETHING passed at all.

If the democrats all voted together like the republiCANTS do then this discussion wouldn't even be happening.

to try to make him look bad now.

I'm seriously waiting for those batshit crazies to start demanding they be allowed to bring their guns to join sessions of congress. they'll get their base all stirred up over that.

I also expect them to start wearing stupid t-shirts with sayings on them.. cuz holding up little hand made signs is gonna get old really fast.

While stirring up one political party at the expense of the other - it's okay to side with right wing insurance but otherwise let the peon dems engage in hissyfit catfights with the peon repubs? (didn't another DUer find something suggesting Joe "You Liar!" is a patsy for the insurance cos too?
