Stocks Flat; Saddam Rumors Spur Buying

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks were near the unchanged mark in early afternoon trading on Tuesday after paring a steep decline as investors put the morning's weak economic data behind them, with buying spurred by rumors former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was captured.

Stocks fell sharply during morning trading after the Conference Board said U.S. consumer confidence for July fell to 76.6 compared with a reading of 83.5 in June. The July reading was expected to be 85.0.

So we get some bad economic numbers and the market starts to tank. Then suddenly "rumors" are floated about Saddama Bin Lost getting caught.
