House Votes Against Bringing Gitmo Detainees to U.S.
Source: ap

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The House went on record Thursday against allowing detainees at the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba to be transferred to the United States, even to face trial or to be jailed in maximum-security prisons.

The 258-163 vote on a nonbinding recommendation put Democrats controlling the House in a difficult spot and prompted senior lawmakers to postpone unveiling a House-Senate agreement on a homeland security funding bill.

If such a ban were to become law, the Obama administration would be hard-pressed to close the Guantanamo Bay prison by January as Obama has promised. Last week the administration acknowledged for the first time that it might not be able to close the facility by that deadline because of difficulties in reviewing detainee files and resolving legal and logistical questions.

Eighty-eight Democrats broke with Obama and House leaders on the nonbinding recommendation, an ominous sign for future votes. It would be difficult for lawmakers to change their positions without drawing withering criticism from political adversaries.

I just saw this and am a little confused. We have to eventually close this facility so how come they can't come up with some reasonable solution? Now it is saying Democrats are not in favor of closing GITMO. I just don't get it.

7. So your position is that Blue Dogs have very little sway in congress?
Edited on Thu Oct-01-09 09:07 PM by Dr Fate
If you say so. Last time I checked, the Healthcare debate and everything else from the war to finance & taxes seems to hinge on what Blue Dogs, DLCers & "centrists" want.

9. It is not just the blue dogs
this was not packaged properly to sell to the American public and now with this latest strategy buy health care or you go to jail we can expect far more trouble. You force things to fast rather than convince people they will revolt even if it may be for their own good!

10. Right- it's not just Blue Dogs who fight for conservative values...
...its also "DLCers" "centrists" "Republicans" and whatever else they are calling themselves this week. All the same.

"This was not pacckaged properly" could be our excuse for almost anything. It's not my fault if Conservative Democrats are too lazy or too morally corrupt to try frame and explain things.

3. Dozens of non-Blue Dog Democrats voted for this
There are only 52 Blue Dogs in the House. This resolution was supported by 88 Democrats.
