Chicago shocked early, then Rio wins '16 Games
Edited on Fri Oct-02-09 11:56 AM by Akoto
Source: MSNBC

COPENHAGEN - Rio de Janeiro defeated Madrid on Friday to host the 2016 Olympics.

Chicago is out — in one of the most shocking defeats ever handed down by the International Olympic Committee. President Barack Obama’s appeals for his adopted home town fell on deaf ears Friday.

Tokyo was knocked out in the second round, surviving one round longer than Chicago.

That left just Rio and Madrid still in the mix. The IOC voted again to separate the two and elected a winner, which will be announced by IOC president Jacques Rogge later Friday.

14. I agree.
Why should we get the games again before South America when we've had them twice already in the last 25 years?

50. We've had 8 total *plus* Canada has had three
Mexico has hosted once. There have been a total of 12 North American games.

Japan has hosted three times, and China and South Korea have hosted once each, for a total of five Asian games.

Australia has hosted twice.

Europe has hosted, like, 30 times.

Africa and South America have never hosted.

I think picking South America is a great idea. :D

42. I was right, it turns out, to think this was Rio's to lose
South America is virtually ignored on the world stage other than Chavez

Brazil will be able to exhibit its self sustained energy system
and it was time for S.America to host

London has 2012 so Madrid would be two Europes in a row
China just had a games so Tokyo wasn't a valid concern

I think what did Chicago in was that it was just Rio's time

hurt America. So now I guess we'll all

23. South America "wins." So does the US.
Hosting the Olympics requires a healthy city. Chicago is not healthy. Corruption is everywhere, finances are a mess, sales taxes are the highest in the entire country, and violence is a fact of daily life for entire neighborhoods away from the Gold Coast.

Chicago needs fundamental reform. Hosting the Olympics would have worsened its problems, not fixed them.

They must have some area in or near the southern zone in mind, since there's no way they can deal with their massive poor population before then.

The US will it get in 2020.

We have London coming up in 2012, then Rio, then the US or somewhere in the Mid-East (?). IT'S A ROTATION, FOLKS. Chill out!

But Chicago being eliminated first was a bunch of croc-shit, Tokyo and Madrid should have been eliminated first. Just by the shear fact that that the Olympics had been in China last yr and that they will be in Europe in '12.

26. The U.S. Presentation...
in my opinion, sucked. It seemed to be more an infomercial for Chicago's "capitalistic" perspective, complete with token fireworks, than a presentation connecting the spirit of Chicago's people (and the people of the U.S.A.) with the spirit of the Olympics.

Rio's presentation, in my opinion, seemed to present a spirit of humanity more in keeping with the spirit of the Olympics.

37. yeah for Rio - definitely when you see a map of the world and who has already had Olympics

you see the importance of it going elsewhere than repeating it in countries who have already had it, multiple times - not to mention entire continents who have been left out... when they show the 5 rings representing the 5 major continents, you'd think they would put their ideals where their mouth was and this time they actually did.

Bravo!

HUGE City and the views there are some of the most beautiful I've seen in my very traveled life. Those slums are there yes and they are trying to clean that up but it's hard with generational poverty in a tourist area.
Always wanted to go back. Not during the Olympics mind, but one of these days.

I suspect Dubya (ie. Cheney) left a bad smell attached to any American proposal that will take years to clear away in the minds of many organizations made up of an international body. The world is just not ready to start awarding the US and by that endorsing the new empirical "American Dream".

35. Chicago was an awful choice to begin with
Sorry, but for so many reasons Chicago was not a good choice. Won't even name them. As an Atlantan, I can say this- I think the IOC remembers how awful the ATL games were compared to some other cities around the world and they don't need any more of US cities with all their problems. Obama never should have gone to Copenhagen, though I don't think his appearance had a thing to do with the loss. Coming in last, however, makes him look like a loser and he is badly in need of a victory. The Republicans are having a field day with it already.

I too live near Atlanta. :hi:

The Olympics here was a logistical nightmare. I wanted to leave town, but couldn't; I had to work, Olympics or no.

And then came the tragic bombing, after which an innocent man was scapegoated to save the Games (and the reputation and investments of assorted fat cats.)

Good luck to Rio. They can have the whole show.

53. I read an article
In a column today Vicki Michaellis of Gannett opines that politics and intrigue seemed to play a HUGE part Chicago's early ouster.

Chicago was considered Rio's only real competition so there was a concerted effort by the Rio backers to keep Chicago out of the final round of voting. Forming coalitions to keep Japan and Spain in the running and knock Chicago out.
