Google has confirmed to BBC News that its e-mail system - Gmail - has been targeted as part of an "industry-wide phishing scheme".

The search giant said that it had taken immediate action to safeguard the affected accounts.

Phishing involves using fake websites to lure people into revealing data such as bank account details or login names.

BBC News has seen two lists that detail more than 30,000 names and passwords that have been posted online.

6. i use a different one for each account and change it regularly indeed...
...moreover, phishing traps require some involuntary assistance from the users.
hopefully the hit ones will be alerted privately. gmail states it has started to do, with an invitation to change passwords.

8. That's funny. Someone will be copying the gmail email
soon, telling people to click a link to change their password. More phishing, and it'll work, too.

7. Phishing, eh? Are people still falling for that crap?
When will people learn never to click links in emails from places where they do business? Never, I suppose...I warn my parents and in-laws about this just about every time I see them.
