Vandals spray-paint 'Kill Obama' on Cave Creek signs

11 comments by Alex Bloom - Oct. 8, 2009 05:37 PM
The Arizona Republic

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is looking into vandalism to two Cave Creek election signs on which vandals spray-painted "Kill Obama" in purple.

The message appeared on two signs, one supporting the renewal of Cave Creek Unified School District's K-3 override and one supporting the K-3 measure and two ballot measures on whether to allow a local Walmart store to be built.

The Sheriff's Office confiscated the two signs, which were at two locations: at Cartwright's Sonoran Ranch House and west of Galloway Drive.

1. So writing death threats on signs, gets those signs taken away in evidence.

6. You're absolutely right. Fascists, racists, religious freaks and right-wingers are all over.
Many of them are employed by the local police departments.

What can anyone expect from a place that has kept Joe Arpaio in office since 1990, giving him landslide victories every time?

I am so glad I am escaping the hell that is Maricopa County.

I think there are and have been pockets there with larger areas of new age and monied retirees.

3. That's Arizona for you. A fascist hellhole and a cesspool of idiocy.
"The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is looking into vandalism to two Cave Creek election signs on which vandals spray-painted "Kill Obama" in purple."

Knowing Sheriff Joe, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office probably approves of the vandalism.

16. Excuse me if I just politely disagree with that idiotic assessment
yes, we have our share and then some of idiots and wingnuts and fascists and morons, but we also have a lot of fine, hardworking, LIBERAL folks here, enough that we elected a Democratic governor a few years ago, and a woman to boot.

Joe Arpaio is an ass, no question, and it's horrible that the voters in Maricopa County keep returning him to office, but that doesn't mean everyone in Maricopa County is an idiot.

It's so damn easy to paint with that broad brush, isn't it?

19. Same here. Not all of us are idiots.
Trailer parks, large business owners and Christian zealots (Mormons, mostly), this is where the GOP gets most of its electorate now.

We need to really do something about the first one.

My Mormon friends will not budge, even when I have some intelligent discussions and brings the facts to them, and they admit I may be right... they still will vote in lockstep with the rest of their crowd.

Large business owners... ok, they vote in their own interests (although Bob Parson -Go Daddy- is known for being a liberal).

And yes, Joe, the "tough" sheriff who will not debate his opponents on TV and trashed his main opponent (Dan Saban)'s reputation.

Note that Joe is taking the spray painting incident seriously.

Do be careful with that broad brush, even when you're sayin' nice things about fellow Arizonans.

I live in Fresno, apparently EVERY single one of us are the stupidest people in the U.S., even though that "study" has holes large enough to fly a 747 through. And it's DUers who are doing it. I can understand some no-talent like Conan O'Brien making fun of us. His rating are in the shitter, as they should be, but DUers? Thhppppptttttt!

Yeah, I can imagine what you deal with, even if I have no idea what "study" you're referring to. But there are some folks here on DU who, well, maybe they just need a little more experience of the world, iykwim. Eventually, in a few years, they'll learn. Maybe.

41. Excuse me?
Here's your subject line:

That's Arizona for you. A fascist hellhole and a cesspool of idiocy.

The two lines of your post were about the defaced signs in Cave Creek and suggested that Joe Arpaio painted them himself.

Actually, I'm a product of the Arlington Heights, Illinois public school system (AHS, '66), plus the University of Illinois and Arizona State University, from which I hold a master's degree in sociology.

I'm sick and tired of the personal insults that are being flung about here. It's one thing to have differing opinions, but virtually every "discussion" on here deteriorates into name calling and demands to conform to whichever ideology the poster is espousing at the moment. There's no civility here any more; there's just outrage and ad hominem attacks.

And don't bother to tell me to just go over to that other site. As I've said before, I've been on DU since sometime before 9/11/01, first under another screen name and then after being verbally attacked and threatened with bodily harm by one of DU's leading lights, I reregistered in early 2002 as Tansy_Gold. I've been here ever since. I have every right to be here, and I have every right not to be insulted. Argued with, yes, but not insulted. NO DUer should be subjected to that.

It's a sign of emotional, if not physical, immaturity.

34. Cave Creek and Carefree both are lovely places.
They are also mostly white -- no surprise -- and probably mostly right-leaning.

But my point to the other poster was that they are not "redneck" by a long shot, and it's simply not a "wal-mart" community. both towns are much more oriented to small, and dare I say artsy, businesses than to big box cheap crap from China stores.

That poster would have known that if he knew much about Cave Creek /Carefree at all.

33. I was raised in Phoenix AZ as a child
My family lived in Sunnyslope and Paradise Valley. That was back when there was more desert, especially out on Cave Creek Rd. My aunt lived in the middle of the desert. They hauled water from the gas station on Cave Creek Rd. My aunt (different aunt) was a secretary to Carl Hayden-democratic senator of Arizona. Yeah, we had the John Birchers and Goldwater is from Arizona. But hell, now days with the freepers, even Goldwater looks liberal to them. My uncle was a bodyguard for FDR and later worked for the juvenile division of the Phoenix police department. In those days, there were lots of Democrats in Arizona, maybe the snowbirds changed the dynamics, who knows?

My cousin-in-law would send me the most hateful anti-Obama emails. When I finally got sick of it she pointed out that she and her friends all loved God and the USA, like that was some kind of excuse. The whole exchange brought an end to our relationship, such as it was.

She is seeing the fruits of that hatred up close and personal right now. Kind of sad really, but irrational hatred has no place in our discourse. Unfortunately that's about all the rwers use anymore.
