President Obama: "We Are Now Closer Than Ever Before to Passing Health Reform -- But We're Not There Yet"

October 13, 2009 6:11 PM

Hailing passage of the Senate Finance Committee health care reform bill as a “critical milestone in our effort to reform our health care system,” President Obama came to the Rose Garden later this afternoon to announce “we are now closer than ever before to passing health reform -- but we're not there yet.”

“Now's not the time to pat ourselves on the back,” the president said. “Now's not the time to offer ourselves congratulations. Now's the time to dig in and work even harder to get this done.”

.....................

He noted that much difficult work lies ahead with “significant details and disagreements to be worked out over the next several weeks as the five separate bills from the Senate and the House are merged into one proposal.”

Some good news from Sen. Rockefeller
by ai002h

He was on the Ed Show earlier this evening and was EXTREMELY bullish on the PO being in the final Senate bill. When Ed claimed pessimism on the PO not passing because of the Finance committee not containing one, he said that was a ridiculous statement and that he spoke to the President this afternoon after the vote, that the President is for a public option, and that the President told him he will coming hard and join the debate when the merging of these bills happens.

2. I tend to believe what Sen. Rockefeller said tonight.
That Obama REALLY wants the public option and that it WILL pass.

3. Jay Rockefeller has been a Profile in Courage on this. Thank you, Senator. K & R.

I am a long way from his state, but I emailed him some weeks ago, when he was the first Senator to say he would not vote for any bill that lacked a public option. I thanked him and asking him to stay strong.

Hey, even a Rockefeller probably could use encouragement now and again.
