(Rep. Harry) Reid rips LDS (Mormon) Church's Prop. 8 support
Source: Salt Lake Tribune

Politics » Majority leader calls it a waste of church resources and good will.

Washington » In a meeting with gay-rights activists last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid criticized the LDS Church for backing a ballot measure banning same-sex marriage in California, saying the leaders of his faith should have stayed out of the contentious political fight.

Reid, a Democrat from Nevada, is the highest ranking elected official who is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He previously has not commented on the flood of Mormon money and volunteers who helped propel Proposition 8 to victory in November.

<snip>

"While Senator Reid agrees with his church that marriage is between a man and a woman," Summers said, "he also believes that the resources that went into the Proposition 8 effort could have been put to better use."

LDS Church officials declined to comment Monday. But Frank Schubert, campaign manager for the pro-Prop 8 movement, said: "All churches have not only the opportunity to speak out on important public issues, but really a moral obligation to do so."

So, Dickless Harry says the church's position is correct... but that what they're doing costs too much money and makes them look like assholes.

What a fucking POLITICIAN he is.

THIS is what Democrats call "Leadership?"

2. Harry Reid's membership in the Moron Cult greatly diminishes his abilities as majority leader.

3. "We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring...
...and sustaining the law."

Reid might be clued into his church history, where there were more than a few times when the church got involved in politics, for moral reasons, and it led to brutal bloodshed.

6. Mormons were not run out of OH, MO,and IL because of "politics, for moral reasons"
...if that is what you are implying.

They were run out of Ohio because they were blamed for a real estate bust in the community.

This is all documented in a PBS documentary on the Mormons. I found it in the library. I would say that they were irritable neighbors whereever they lived but they were not running political campaigns for moral reasons.

We are supposed to be the country of religious and nonreligious freedom.

11. Uh, one documentary doesn't tell the whole picture.
"In Ohio, anti-Mormons focused on the ill-fated banking efforts of the Kirtland Safety Society and other failed economic experiments including the United Order.

In Missouri, once the gathering place of the Latter Day Saints, Mormons tended to vote as a bloc, wielding "considerable political and economic influence," often unseating local political leadership and earning long-lasting enmity in the sometimes hard-drinking, hard-living frontier communities.<23> These differences culminated in hostilities and the eventual issuing of an executive order (since called the Extermination Order) by Missouri governor Lilburn Boggs declaring "the Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the State." Three days later, a renegade militia unit attacked a Mormon settlement at Haun's Mill, resulting in the death of 18 Mormons and no militiamen. The Extermination Order was not formally rescinded until 1976.

In Nauvoo, Illinois, persecutions were often based on the tendency of Mormons to "dominate community, economic, and political life wherever they resided."<24> The city of Nauvoo had become the largest in Illinois, the city council was predominantly Mormon, and the Nauvoo Legion (the Mormon militia) had grown to a quarter of the size of the U.S. Army. "

..for an idea of the US's supposed religious, and non religious, freedom.

8. Since he's hitting things at the height of their relevance, any Terry Schaivo comments
he'd like to make? I can't wait to find out what he thinks about health care reform... in 20 years.

9. Senate Majority Leader goes on record favoring discrimination, yet keeps job.
Just thought I'd try my hand at writing headlines again. I used to do it for our union local's newspaper before I married.

For all those who castigate Reid, remember this: If one or both of your Senators are Democrats, he/she/they probably voted to make Reid Democratic leader of the Senate, both when he was elected Minority Leader and again when he was elected Majority Leader.
