S.D. governor backs bill to ban abortions
South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds said today that he will sign a bill banning most abortions in the state providing that legislators clarify language to ensure that current restrictions remain in force while the new law is under consideration in the courts.

Lawmakers will be asked to approve changes in the bill when they return to the Capitol on Monday for the final day of this year's legislative session. If signed by Rounds, a Republican who has favored abortion restrictions, South Dakota's new law would allow abortion only to save the life or health of the mother. An exception for cases involving rape or incest was rejected in both the House and Senate.

In conversations with legislative leaders today and at a noon news conference at the Capitol in Pierre, Rounds said the bill passed last month does not make it clear enough that the state's current limits on abortion would stay in effect if a court suspended enforcement of the new law. If legislators agree to the changes he requested, he said, he would sign the bill into law.

Backers of the ban have said they hope it sets up a court fight that leads to a reversal of the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision legalizing abortion. Abortion rights advocates have said they would appeal the law as unconstitutional and immediately ask a federal judge to enjoin the state from enforcing it.

4. Didn't he veto it?
I swear I saw on CNN that he vetoed the bill. Didn't say anything about redrafting it. Granted, it was CNN.

6. He issued a technical veto

I think its because the bill eliminates some restrictions on abortions and replaces it with a much larger ban and Rounds wants to make sure that those restrictions that are on the books survive even during a legal challenge. He issued a veto that will say that as long as the legislature agrees to the changes he requested then the bill will become law. It appears that the legislature will agree.

5. Tennessee Moving to Restrict, Following SCOTUS
There's a bill working its way through the TN legislation, a constitutional amendment that's sum is: TN can't go beyond the SCOTUS. Meaning, if Roe V Wade is overturned, TN will easily be able to ban all abortion.

The state Senate last night stripped the right to an abortion in cases of rape, incest or to protect the life of the mother from a proposed anti-abortion amendment to the state constitution.

The effect of the action was to give the legislature authority to make exceptions if abortions were ever outlawed in Tennessee.

...

Herron offered this scenario: If the constitutional amendment passes with Norris' wording and the U.S. Supreme Court overturns abortion protections in Roe vs. Wade, the Tennessee legislature could choose to ban abortion but not choose to put in safeguards for victims of rape or incest or women whose lives are in danger.

...
As the measure stands, the constitutional amendment would read:

''Nothing in this constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or the funding thereof; except the legislature shall have the authority to make such exceptions as the legislature deems necessary, including the authority to make exceptions in the case of rape or incest or to save the life of the mother.''

7. Pay attention people: you might think this isn't your problem if you aren'
female. Or that gay marriage rights aren't a problem if you aren't gay. But these people don't want to stop here. They want it ALL. THEOCRACY. These are just the beginning, baby steps towards their agenda. Time to read up on Christian reconstructionists, dominionists, and then go reread "The Handmaid's Tale". That is the world they have in mind for us.
