Top US court to hear Guantanamo Uighur case

(AFP) –

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear a plea from Uighur inmates in Guantanamo Bay prison to be freed in the United States, a decision which could complicate plans to close the jail.

The long, drawn-out case comes after a federal judge last year ordered that the Uighurs, who have been cleared of all charges, should be released onto US soil where families from the large Uighur community are willing to take them in.

But that decision was overturned on appeal, pushing their lawyers to turn to the Supreme Court in a bid to free the men, who have been held on the US military base in Cuba for more than seven years.
