Iran, Powers Get Draft Deal For Approval By Friday

Skip to next paragraph VIENNA (Reuters) - The U.N. nuclear watchdog chief said on Wednesday he had given Iran and three world powers a draft text of a deal for approval by Friday to help allay concerns over Tehran's nuclear programme.

International Atomic Energy Agency director Mohamed ElBaradei spoke at the conclusion of two and a half days of difficult, politically charged talks involving Iran, France, Russia and the United States at IAEA headquarters.

Diplomats said ElBaradei's draft contained the powers' call for Iran to send some 75 percent of its enriched uranium reserve abroad before the end of this year for conversion into fuel for a Tehran reactor producing medical isotopes.

This would reduce the high risk cited by the West of Iran, under suspicion over nuclear secrecy and restrictions on IAEA inspections, using a growing low-enriched uranium stockpile to refine to high purity suitable for atom bombs.

Iran nuclear fuel talks end with proposal but no deal

Vienna - Talks on processing Iran's nuclear fuel abroad concluded Wednesday in Vienna with no final agreement, but with a proposal to be mulled by Iran, Russia, France and the United States until Friday.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohamed ElBaradei said that 'that transaction using Iranian low-enriched uranium to be manufactured is a very important confidence-building measure' that 'could open the way for a complete normalization of relations between Iran and the international community.'

The IAEA hosted the four-party talks that started Monday and drafted the proposal.

However, Iran's delegation chief Ali Asghar Soltanieh refused to answer journalists' questions whether his country was in fact ready to ship most or any of it's enriched uranium stock out of the country for further enrichment.

'You'll get an answer to your question on Friday,' he said after the talks hosted by the IAEA.

'And we will come back and reflect our opinion and suggestions or comments in order to have an amicable solution at the end of the day,' he said.

1. The military industrial complex won't like that.
A war with Iran would be their biggest payday ever. They still have their fingers crossed.

3. This is wonderful. I sincerely hope the good news continues to flow from Iran.
I'm sure that old school still survives in Iran. There we learn the best way to defeat adversaries and detractors is to live well and act with honor and integrity in all our dealings. I can see that light that yearns to burn even brighter.

4. Iran Agrees to Draft of Deal on Exporting Nuclear Fuel
Source: The New York Times

VIENNA ? The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency said Wednesday that Iranian negotiators had agreed to a draft of an agreement to ship much of its stockpile of nuclear fuel to Russia, but cautioned that it would have to be approved by Friday in both Tehran and Washington.

The key to the agreement, if it works, would be in the timing of the shipments ? a detail officials were not discussing in Vienna in the hours after the announcement. If Iran actually sends the full 2,600 pounds of low-enriched uranium at issue to Russia in a single shipment, it would have too little fuel on hand to build a nuclear weapon for roughly a year, according to the agency?s experts. But if the fuel leaves Iran in batches, the experts warn, Iran would have the ability to replace it almost as quickly as it leaves the country.

This could be huge. Frankly I don't give a damn if Iran has a nuclear weapon, because countries with nukes don't attack each other besides India and Pakistan.

Breaking news from The Associated Press: the Iranians may in fact accept a crucial nuclear deal:

Iranian negotiators on Wednesday expressed support for a deal that — if accepted by their leaders — would delay Tehran’s ability to make nuclear weapons by sending most of its existing enriched uranium to Russia for processing, diplomats said. International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei said that representatives of Iran and its three interlocutors — the U.S., Russia and France — had accepted the draft for forwarding to their capitals. ElBaradei said he hoped for approval from all four countries by Friday.

9. Indeed!
Edited on Wed Oct-21-09 10:04 AM by Vehl

But i bet the repugs would somehow find a way to claim that this is not a "big deal" and/or that it might somehow affect the "security" of the united states. Those folks would rather have Iran get the nukes if it would help Obama look like a failure

.....

"Everyone in this talks was trying to look to the future, not the past, and heal the wounds existing for many years ... This (deal, if formally approved), should open space for negotiations" on broader steps to resolve the crisis, (ElBaradei) said.

This is very encouraging news, indeed.
