Almost 8,000 Michigan residents apply for medical marijuana program in first six months

About 88 percent of Michigan residents who have applied for the state’s Medical Marijuana Program have been accepted and granted cards that allow them to legally use marijuana for medicinal purposes.

According to the Department of Community Health, which oversees the program, 1,035 of 7,986 applications submitted to the department were denied, primarily due to missing paperwork or errors in the forms.

MDCH on average has received about 285 applications a week since the program started in April.

Celeste Clarkson, MDCH compliance section manager, said 4,884 medical marijuana cards have been issued to patients and 1,982 have been issued to caregivers.

1. The NM program is barely getting started
so I thought I'd let the AIDS and cancer patients have first whack at it.

However, as a fibro sufferer whose pain is so bad I missed a fracture in my upper back because it didn't hurt that much more than usual, I will be applying in the future.

4. Don't deny yourself the chance to relieve your pain.
You have as much right to MMJ as any other patient. There is no need for you to wait to let others 'have first whack at it.'

6. Yes, there is.
The wasting associated with AIDS and cancer is life threatening.

I do have pain medication. It just doesn't work all that well by itself.

5. That's great, but how many baby steps must we take before we just decriminalize it outright?

8. I Wish they'd just decriminalize or better yet, legalize, and tax.
