(U.S.) Navy ship accidentally fires (machine gun) on Polish port
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) -- A crew member aboard a U.S. Navy ship accidentally fired a machine gun into the Polish port city of Gdynia on Wednesday while cleaning the weapon, Navy officials said Friday.

Three rounds were fired from an M240 machine gun into the town but no injuries or damage were reported, officials said.

The gun, aboard the USS Ramage, a Navy destroyer, is used to defend the ship in close combat.

Navy officials said a crew member was cleaning the weapon when it accidentally discharged.

The incident happened as the ship was in port after retuning from an international exercise in the Baltic Sea. It was preparing to leave later that day, the Navy said.

39. The CO is responsible for everything that happens during his command.
Edited on Sun Nov-01-09 03:16 AM by denbot
It is likely he will be passed over on the next promotion. Who ever did not follow proper procedure during the maintenance of the weapon is going to Captains Mast (article 15), and possibly that person's immediate supervisor.

Shit generally rolls down hill, but any type of major incident, especially one that could have lead to an international incident, will affect the career of the skipper.

the Navy does not waste any time relieving officers of their commands for issues like this.

22. If i am correct..
that is a light machine gun. It may have been used for some type of security in port. Maybe for small craft piloted by meatpuppets on the hunt for 72 virgins.

25. It is but when we were in port guard duty was with a shotgun and a .45
Shit, now that I think about it, thats all we used when we where in the gulf ports. We also had the usual 50cals, 60s, 20mm and 40mm grenade launchers but those were locked before we entered port. I guess it only takes one destroyer to spring a leak and it all goes to hell.

44. That changed when the Cole was hit.
Light deck guns are now kept loaded and manned at all times when in a foreign port. Approach one and you'll get a spray of bullets across the water in front of you, followed by kill shots when you get within 20 yards if you aren't changing course.

Yeah, they really don't screw around with it anymore. Nearly losing a ship in a friendly port to a bunch of amateurs in a fishing boat does tend to change policies a bit.

Still, it's something some jerks would like to do in the name of national security, of course.

U.S. Military Wanted to Provoke War With Cuba

Book: U.S. Military Drafted Plans to Terrorize U.S. Cities to Provoke War With Cuba

By David Ruppe
N E W Y O R K, May 1, 2001
ABC

In the early 1960s, America's top military leaders reportedly drafted plans to kill innocent people and commit acts of terrorism in U.S. cities to create public support for a war against Cuba.

Code named Operation Northwoods, the plans reportedly included the possible assassination of Cuban émigrés, sinking boats of Cuban refugees on the high seas, hijacking planes, blowing up a U.S. ship, and even orchestrating violent terrorism in U.S. cities.

The plans were developed as ways to trick the American public and the international community into supporting a war to oust Cuba's then new leader, communist Fidel Castro.

America's top military brass even contemplated causing U.S. military casualties, writing: "We could blow up a U.S. ship in Guantanamo Bay and blame Cuba," and, "casualty lists in U.S. newspapers would cause a helpful wave of national indignation."

Details of the plans are described in Body of Secrets (Doubleday), a new book by investigative reporter James Bamford about the history of America's largest spy agency, the National Security Agency. However, the plans were not connected to the agency, he notes.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=92662

"The scary thing is none of this stuff comes out until 40 years after," says Bamford.

They probably thought no one would've heard of false flags by then in the DUngeon or GD or LBN...
