A secret Athens Olympics security operation involving several hundred American troops started yesterday, the day after Greece's new conservative Prime Minister took the troubled Games under his personal wing.
There is a news blackout on the operation, codenamed "Hercules Shield", but Greek military sources said US forces would mainly play a command role for 2000 Greek troops.
Costas Karamanlis's conservative Government, which took office on Tuesday, is also poised to ask NATO for help in protecting the Olympics, an unprecedented step that would seek to have the alliance provide surveillance planes and logistical support.
Officials said the Government would decide whether to submit a formal request to NATO in the coming weeks.
