Bush Highlights Agenda for Christians
WASHINGTON -- President Bush told evangelical Christians what they wanted to hear Thursday, ticking off highlights of his "compassionate conservative" agenda, from halting late-term abortions to banning gay marriage.

Evangelical Christians represent a core constituency for the president. Self-described Christian conservatives preferred Bush over Al Gore 80 percent to 18 percent, according to exit polls in 2000.

Bush opened his address via satellite to the National Association of Evangelicals Convention in Colorado by lavishing praise on the group: "You're doing God's work with conviction and kindness," Bush said.

Bush placed special emphasis on his efforts to curtail abortion -- a goal fervently pursued by conservative Christians.

"We're working to build a culture of life," he said, noting that he had taken "an important step" last November when he signed legislation outlawing certain late-term abortions.

Three federal judges immediately blocked the law, and Bush promised that, "We will vigorously defend this law against any attempt to overturn it in the courts."

1. I don't think he'll see the numbers he saw in 2000...
Edited on Thu Mar-11-04 03:09 PM by alg0912
I get a strong sense that, like with every other segment of society, he's made more fundies angry than he's won over, leaving him with a net loss of supporters. Put a Roy Moore candidacy into the equation, and he can kiss the rest of them goodbye...

4. I know some really Christian people, and they are pissed!
They voted for Bush, last time, but think they have been had. (I told them, you HAVE been had.)

If Roy Moore runs, the ballgame is OVER!

Delusion is rampant in the brain of any person who thinks for a nanosecond that the court appointed brat is connected with any diety at all. Except for maybe an evil diety.

27. But don't ALL evangelical christians call people "asshole" in public?
I still wonder how those people that buy his fake religion crap can explain that... He's not a born-again christian.. any more than any of those guys that attend that bible boot camp for politicans. It's a fake.. it's all political. What other president has ever pandered to that group of people? He can't be bothered to do press conferences, but he speaks to the evangelical voting bloc every chance he gets. IF there is a God.. he would be very comfy during a rapture.

5. Can someone tell me where the 4 million evangelical number comes from?
How can you survey people who don't vote?

I am looking forward with great enthusiasm to both the voter behavior numbers for 2004 and the new and improved replaced for VNS.

8. I've been on this site for only a couple of days, and I am
disappointed to see so many postings that don't discuss the issues but just ridicule and name-call. Where's the debate? Bush is a stupid, ignorant, fundie, monkey, etc. -- fine, but where is some intelligent debate???

12. Hi Roaming!
Welcome to DU! :hi:

You'll find a nice mix of serious discussion, as well as plenty of irreverence. That's what makes DU such a blast!

Keep in mind one of the great new features here on DU is the "hide thread" function. If a certain thread isn't your cup of tea, you can hide it.

Again, welcome to DU! Glad to have you here! :hi:

22. Just stay with us....
One of the things that sets most Dems apart from Repugs is that we can have intellectual and serious discussions but we can also have a lot of fun and irreverent humor. I, for one, am sick of the down-in-the-mouth, negative, terra, terra, terra, atmosphere that the Repugs want to surround us with and I'm not giving up my sense of humor and becoming like them. They want us to live in a state of perpetual fear with no laughing or smiling or joking around. The Repigs are jealous that we know how to have a good time and they don't which is why they so detested President Clinton. I believe it was Maureen Dowd who described their persecution of President Clinton as "a bunch of unpopular geeks in high school who can't get a date for the prom while the captain of the football team has girls throwing themselves at him." (I know that's probably not verbatim - but I tried.)

Yeah,...this man is evil, along with his cabal.

13. The latest breaking news section
is the best in the country for keeping up on the news, quickly. In addition, I have learned more here than on any other site, and I visit plenty every day.

One of the downsides, I admit, is that there are a lot of very angry people venting at this troubling regime. Nonetheless, it more than worth it for the news, the camaraderie, and the true analysis. Many threads have additional links in them, and lots of information you won't get anywhere else.

I love this site. I try to ignore the name-calling, although deep inside I secretly agree.

Welcome aboard.

20. You will, you will.
There's humour (my Aussie spelling), some ranting, and many debates
so serious and intelligent that my poor brain just spins - I lurk
and learn from those.

There are many issues I don't qualify to discuss because they're
very localised to the U.S., but I've found it to be fun, and warm,
and very sympatico.

17. Evangelicals are the only ones against abortion but...
don't take away their guns. The abortion theme is dead and so is the gun issue. Repigs had to come up with the same-sex marriage issue and 911. As Bill Maher said, "what's the problem with same-sex marriage? Isn't that what we all get when we get married. Same sex over and over."

I thought they were saying nobody should get married without a sex-change ...

Afterall, I'm sure he feels the need to convert everyone to Christianity, and he isn't above using that ideal for an election prop.

24. This is the heart of his base
And these people CAN be turned. Many are decent folks who have been sold a pathetic sack of shit that they were told was a piece of the true cross. They are obsessed with the abortion issue and are terrified of gays. I know some of them and they are growing tired of clamping their eyes and ears shut. At some level they know Bush is a complete phony, but they desperately want to believe he is a good man, a godly man. They are good at believing difficult things that they have been taught....but they are starting to waver.

Their so called moral stances makes them vulnerable to arguments which shred Bush's cloak of decency. Hammering at Bush's lies, greed and hypocrisy is the best way to show them the emperor has no clothes. If just another 10% of these folks wakes up and sees Bush as a deeply flawed sinner, it is the whole ball game.

I suggest that each of us make a pledge to convert just one of these Christian Bush backers to Kerry. How hard can it be to portray Bush as a cheat, liar, thief and hypocrit? Just do it nicely with facts, articles, links etc. A pillar of the church would be best but turning just a few could make the whole deck of cards fall. Some might publicly continue to say they support him but once in the voting booth they will pull the lever for Kerry and the trapdoor for Bush to Crawford.

...of his pandering to the Hispanic population.

Freepers are hopping mad because Bush has suggested legalizing some illegal aliens.
