Asian carp may have breached barrier for lake

Great Lakes advocates said today they’ve been told that DNA evidence of one species of Asian carp has been detected above the electric barrier intended to keep the fish out of Lake Michigan.

The DNA was detected in a channel that splits off the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal below Chicago, and leads to Lake Michigan, known as the Cal-Sag channel.

“That is what we understand,” said Jennifer Nalbone, director of Great Lakes United’s campaign against invasive species.

DNA testing of water samples near the electric barrier on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal taken beyond the barrier and Lake Michigan on Sept. 23 and Oct. 1 shows the presence of Asian carp about 1 mile south of the O’Brien Lock, about 8 miles from Lake Michigan, the Army Corps of Engineers and other agencies said today.

Previously, DNA of Asian carp has been found a mile below the barrier.

2. Electricity-resistant Asian carp! These invasive species may be all we have to eat, eventually.
With the rest of the world fish population going down the tubes.

6. There were plans to replace the infrastructure to separate the watersheds
It would have been an expensive project. It looks like we missed our opportunity.

The carp are going to destroy the walleye fishery in Lake Erie. This is horrible.

16. "Walleye fishery." As in walleye PIKE?

Could you explain how carp are going to wipe out something as predatory as a species of pike? Do they eat pike eggs/young or something?

17. Walleyes are not related to pike.
It is a member of the darter (perch) family.

18. Interesting. Didn't know that.
Okay, so they're not pike. But you didn't answer my other questions. They're still heavily carnivorous, right?
So how are carp a threat? Do they eating the walleyes' eggs/young faster than they can breed?

7. Experience has shown that it's almost impossible to
stop the spread of an invasive aquatic species, once it has been introduced. They keep trying, and they keep losing.

Years down the road, we finally can figure out what harm, if any, those exotic species do.

15. That's really sad news.
They had the opportunity to stop them but dicked around long enough for this predictable outcome.
