Mexico state shuts controversial Canadian-run mine
December 8, 2009 10:41 PM ET

TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico (AP) - A Canadian-owned mine at the center of a dispute over the slaying of a Mexican mining activist has been shut down for environmental reasons, authorities said Tuesday.

The mine operated by Blackfire Exploration Ltd. in southern Mexico near the Guatemalan border "was closed because it was affecting the environment," Chiapas state's environmental department said in a statement.

Authorities accused the company of building roads and changing land use without authorization as well as polluting.

1. So it was "affecting the environment" was it?
Talk about an understatement.

Thank the gods this awful mine is closing. Too bad it took the death of such a fine activist to get them to finally shut it down.

3. This one operates just like Barrick, but it is owned by Blackfire out of Calgary

Blackfire ignores all environmental laws just the same as Barrick does. Nasty operators.

If you are interested, Infoshop has a great article on this mine and the activism going on right now in Mexico
