UAW will nominate Bob King to replace President Ron Gettlefinger

The United Auto Workers will meet this week to nominate Vice President Bob King as the successor to President Ron Gettlefinger. According to sources, the labor union’s administrative caucus is expected to announce their support of King after a meeting on Wednesday. The UAW membership will vote for the new President in June, but the leadership’s nominee has typically easily won that vote. King led the negotiations with Ford during the recent downturn in auto sales. Contract modifications that would have provided Ford with concessions similar to those reached with General Motors and recommended by the UAW leadership were rejected by 70 percent of the workers who voted. It was known that Dennis Williams had planned to seek the top seat, but according to the Wall Street Journal on Friday an agreement was reached that will see the director of UAW Region 4 step into the role of Secretary-Treasurer. King has been a member of the UAW since 1970 and was first elected to serve as Vice Presidenct in 2006.
