Many companies working in Iraq are GOP donors

WASHINGTON -- Many of the companies that were awarded $130 million in Iraq reconstruction business this Wednesday have been generous Republican donors.

The Parsons Brinkerhoff construction company, picked to manage reconstruction of Iraq's electricity grid, gave $90,000 to Republican committees in the past five years, $8,500 to similar Democratic groups.

The contracts were awarded in the shadow of controversy over Iraq work given to Vice President Dick Cheney's former firm, Halliburton Co. Some of that work is now under criminal investigation.

The Pentagon said it chooses contractors based on which have the best management and offer the best price, but acknowledged that the military has made mistakes.
