Al Queda Not The Only Enemy

The article says that Peter Bergen, CNN terrorism expert, stated that..."you can arrest as many people as you want to but you can't arrest a movement of ideas."

www.cnn.com

If that is so,even if Osama is caught, there are many others that will take his place.
Sounds like Howard Dean may be proven right-- *we are not safer now that Saddam has been captured."

8. The link has a new headline, they name the bombers
Al queda, Morrocans.

Right now, AQ is the enemy.

For generations, a global network of terrorists who are intent on destroying western secular society.

I feel like going back to bed all of a sudden....

9. Good point. But why did you mention Saddam?
Saddam had nothing to do with Al Qaeda. So even if you believe that arresting/killing members of Al Qaeda IS effective - capturing Saddam did not make us safer.

10. I've always agreed

(W)e are not safer now that Saddam has been captured.

That is true for two reasons. The first of these is the one you state.

The second is that the invasion had nothing to do with fighting terrorism. Saddam had neither anything of value he could give to terrorists (i.e., biochemical weapons) nor a close association with any, least of all al Qaida. Therefore, the invasion could do nothing to alleviate the problem of international terrorism.

It's that second point that needs to be hammered home, in conjunction with the thesis that Bush had know all along that Saddam was neither a threat nor had terrorist connections.

13. And add the fact that the iraq attack had been planned for two years.

Seems like more and more people are starting to recognize the fact that this war was planned far before 9/11. Therefore, there was no terror connection.

12. Exactly
You can't just think getting Osma bin laden is gonna miraculously "end" all the attacks. He has so many willing and waiting to take his his place. It's extremely naive to get "comfortable" with the possible capture of him. I worry that his may happen.

Bergen is right on with this --"it's hard to 'arrest' a movement."
