Push for consumer protection agency faces obstacles in new bipartisan talks
Source: The Hill

By Silla Brush - 02/11/10 11:27 PM ET

The push for a new federal agency for consumer financial protection faces major obstacles, even as senators on Thursday resumed bipartisan negotiations.

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) announced new negotiations with freshman Republican Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) after a previous round of bipartisan talks had collapsed. Dodd had reached an "impasse" with the top Republican on the panel, Sen. Richard Shelby (Ala.), particularly over a proposed Consumer Financial Protection Agency (CFPA) to regulate products such as home loans and credit cards.

Corker said in an interview that he opposes a fully standalone agency that is backed by President Barack Obama and supported by the House in a December vote.

"For Republicans, including me, a free-standing agency is a nonstarter," Corker said in the interview. "Obviously consumer protection needs to be addressed and addressed in a balanced way."

"a free-standing agency is a nonstarter" I suppose an ideal 'starter' would be a bank-backed agency.

1. "balanced"
During Bush's reign the Repugs used the word "balanced" to mean "give the corporations everything they want and screw the ordinary citizens." They were always reviewing agency regulations to "ensure they were administered in a 'balanced' manner." Which meant the EPA became the Environmental Destruction Agency, the FDA became an arm of the pharmaceutical industry, etc.

Why are we even listening to these assholes? They didn't even admit the Dems existed when they had control of the House, Senate and Presidency. And they didn't have anywhere as many senators as the Dems do. As Slim Pickens said in "Blazing Saddles", "I am perplexed."

2. I guess Mr. Obama slept through his term in the Senate and never
saw how the GOP operated under the dictatorship. "bipartisan talks" = FORGETABOUTIT

I'm perplexed too. We voted for Change and we're getting McSame.

3. How quickly the democrats in Washington have forgotten and forgiven.
Here is a little dose or reality...

"We may not have realized it at the time, but in the period from late 2001-January 19, 2009, this country was a dictatorship."

We shouldn't make deals with "Dictators" and their more than willing henchmen.(even if they are "YOUR GOOD FRIENDS" across the aisle)

4. Well, we can't have consumer PROTECTION, can we?
After all, corporations only have our best interests at heart and would NEVER, EVER hurt people.

5. Why in the name of gawd do we need talks with the enemy?
We have clear majorities and the White House. Pass what we want.

Cloture? Why worry? MAKE THE BASTARDS filibuster! See how long they last. There hasn't been one since the 1990s. Reminds me of a deal where a cousin of mine was cornered by a large robber who demanded money or he would beat him up. His response? "You may be able to whip my ass, but YOU WILL HAVE TO!"

The guy left.

6. That would be so uncivilized. Forcing your will upon Republicans.
President Obama can still win some Republican votes.
