Suspected armed Maoist rebels riding motorcycles on Monday killed 14 policemen in a daring gun and bomb attack on a security camp in eastern India, police and officials said.

It was the deadliest Maoist raid on security forces since October, when the left-wing guerrillas gunned down 17 policemen in western India, one of a series of assaults in an increasingly lethal insurgency.

The latest deadly rebel attack came amidst a security offensive in several states to flush out the outlawed insurgents from their strongholds, Indian television reported.

Two Maoist guerrillas were also killed in Monday's raid in West Bengal state's Midnapore district following a gunbattle with security forces, local administrator N.S. Nigam told AFP.

1. The insurgency cannot be defeated militarily.

There is a high level of political support for the Maoists in several Indian states, and it is growing. India as a unitary state cannot last. A federative multi-national republic - like is being formed in Nepal - is a better option. And the best option for dealing with the Maoists is to initiate a peace process and integration of the Indian PLA with the old state army, just like in Nepal.

Since the Maoists gained ascendancy in Nepal, minorities have gained important rights, education have become much cheaper, abortion has been legalized, and same sex marriage will become legal soon.

2. Maoists are funded by Pakistan via Bangladesh

when Pakistan disappears via balkanization, the maoists will be finished as well for lack of arms and money.

5. The Maoists are self-funded.

This insurgency has existed since the late 60s and is self-reliant. It is nobody's client, and is not beholden even to the Nepalese Maoists, with whom they have major disagreements of principle.

The arms come from the Indian state - from troops and police that are killed or otherwise disarmed. The money comes from contributions and taxes imposed in areas under their control or influence.
