(Mullah) Omar, Osama in 'safe havens' in Pakistan: Burney
Source: Zee News (India)

ISLAMABAD -- Former Pakistan human rights minister Ansar Burney has once again raised concerns over terrorists taking refuge in the country’s financial capital, Karachi, and said that extremist leaders were hiding in ‘safe havens’ in the country under patronage of political parties.

Burney said the arrest of Abu Riyan-al-Zarqawi, one of the close aides of Taliban Chief Mullah Omar and al Qaeda head Osama bin Laden, has proved that a number of extremist chieftains have taken refuge in the city.

Burney said Zarqawi’s revelation that Mullah Omar and bin Laden were in Pakistan is a matter of grave concern.

“After the arrest of Zarqawi, who is also known as Abu Musa, it is now confirmed that the leadership of the al Qaeda and Taliban are in Karachi and enjoying their life in safe havens,” The News quoted Burney, as saying....

I tend to give this kind of "where's Osama?" report very little credence, but Ansar Burney saying it is probably worth noting.

Also worth noting, in case it's getting to be a bit much: he's not talking about the Zarqawi we're familiar with, but another one Pakistan picked up this month, a (fairly subsidiary) deputy of Mullah Omar.

1. There Has Never Been Much Doubt Of This, Sir, As A General Proposition
At the very least, the I.S.I. has a working address to which the retainer checks are delivered....

4. Unless they figured out how to create zombies, Osama is dead.

But it's really funny/sad how every three months, he's alive, he's dead, he's alive, he's dead, he's alive, he's dead.

5. You'll notice, no one but Burney
...is reporting Zarqawi’s "revelations" that Mullah Omar and bin Laden were in Pakistan.

No one.

Google Burney. He's probably connected enough in Pak to get this kind of information. But I don't see an upside for him to reveal it if it ain't so.

6. But if no one else is reporting this, it's uncorroborated, and not credible.
That's basic intelligence 101, isn't it?

But setting even that aside, from what I can see, he is not stating firsthand knowledge, but rather simply referring to previous erroneous reports:

>>“It was shocking to know after the reports that Osama bin Laden and Mulla Omar were in Pakistan under the patronage of some political parties and supporters in the Government. After the arrest of Abu Musa, it is now confirmed that the leadership of the al Qaeda and Taliban are in Karachi and enjoying their life in safe havens,” Burney said.<<

7. Basic reporting 101, at least.
To rip off a line from a fellow DUer, chasing intelligence in Pakistan is like tracking down a fart in a jacuzzi tub.

The "report" he talking about, yes, has been discredited. Supposedly. But Burney's still on about it.

Did you catch the news that Mohammad Haji Zaman (guy who supposedly took a bunch of $$ to shuttle OBL out of Tora Bora) was killed by a suicide bomber, with a dozen other folks?
