Hurricane-Like Storm Aims for Pennsylvania to Maine Thursday, Friday
Source: ACCUWEATHER

A powerful storm of historical proportions is aiming at much of the Northeast Thursday into Friday and will follow up to a foot and a half of snow through Wednesday over upstate New York and western New England.

This second storm will be nothing short of a monster. Even in light of the blizzards earlier this winter that targeted the southern mid-Atlantic, this may be the one that people remember the most this winter in parts of New England and the northern mid-Atlantic.

At its peak, the storm will deliver near hurricane-force wind gusts (74 mph) blinding snow falling at the rate of over an inch per hour. For some people in upstate New York and eastern and northern Pennsylvania, this may seem more like a "snow hurricane" rather than a blizzard.

Cities likely to be impacted by heavy snow for all or at least part of the storm include: New York City, Albany, Rochester, Syracuse, Binghamton, Scranton, Allentown, Reading, Williamsport and Burlington.

The storm also deliver heavy rain and flooding northeast of the center of circulation.

The cities of Boston, Providence and Portland may have their hands full with coastal flooding problems.

The combination of wind, heavy rain and heavy snow will lead to extensive power outages and property damage. Where numerous trees and lines are blown down, the power could be out for a week in some areas.

years (see the first post to this topic), that every occurence of extreme weather is becasue of GW.

Of course doesnt mean I bought into it. I forgot to add my sarcasm thingy....

37. Well, this might not be proof of anything....but if the fresh water is increasing in the
north Atlantic then the Gulf Stream conveyor may slow, or stop. If that were to happen, and it has in the past, the Northeast might be under hundreds of feet of snow in just a couple years. Really.

Personally, I think that this unusual weather IS proof of climate change. Call it what you will. This past January was one of the warmest, globally, or maybe THE warmest, globally, on record. Humans better wake up and get real. There isn't much room for error on this, folks. IMO.

39. LOL, no, I just remember a recent winter very similar to this.
We had an absolutely ridiculous dump in early March, then everything melted for an early Spring. Then a few weeks later we had a horrendous ice storm. I live on an old Christmas tree farm. The farmer planted Christmas trees in rows back around 1951, but never harvested them, so we're talking 40' Christmas trees, now. Between the ice, wind and soaked ground, 5 acres of trees dropped like rows of dominoes.

I had taken pictures of the snow, then forgotten all about that storm when the ice hit. I took more pictures of the ice, and was surprised by the previous snow scenes on the same roll of film.

Anyhow, this winter seems to be playing out the same way.

15. Accuweather may or may not be jumping the gun on this one.
The NWS hasn't poasted yet nr has the Weather Channel. On the other hand, local meteorologist Kevin Phillips has been warning us here in Central New York to watch out for this week-end sincelast week-end.

Another local guy with long experience here agrees:
We have a very complicated weather pattern ahead for the next several days, and it all starts with low pressure and a rain/snow mix working in from the south tonight. As temperatures drop a few degrees, this will allow a dramatic blossomming of a wet snow to form for much of upstate New York. While our computer models continue to differ on the exact amount of snow central and eastern New York will receive, some snow will occur locally. The heaviest snow should fall from Utica/Rome east into eastern NY and taper off midday Wednesday. This is only part one. A tremendous amount of energy from the south and west is then forecast to work in and blow up a strong storm over the northeast Thursday into Friday with plenty of moisture and increasing winds. The exact location of the center of the storm will be a major factor in who gets hit with the heaviest snow. Right now northern and eastern NY would appear to be in line for the heaviest snows, but stay tuned! My forecast for tonight, rain and wet snow will change to periods of wet snow. Accumulation 1-3" overnight except 3-6" Utica/Rome and 6-10" for the Hudson Valley. Wind: E then N 0-9 MPH.

18. Northwest NJ here
and according to the latest weather on the 8's, the Weather Channel says we're getting snow tonight, tomorrow, and then the big one on Thursday & Friday. Tonight & tomorrow we're looking at 1-3 inches, but there will be periods of rain that keep the accumulation down. They're not giving anything other than "Snow" for Thursday, but the crawl at the bottom of the screen says we're in a winter weather advisory & watch from now until Friday!

The wind is what I hate the most. Accuweather is saying sustained winds of 28 mph, with gusts up to 58 mph. Hope all my trees stay up! Guess I'll be hitting the grocery store tomorrow for some food that doesn't need to be cooked and some extra water.

45. We Have Been Lucky For Quite Awhile!
My wife and I are retired or at least we thought we were. Living 40 miles east of Albany NY and 10 miles west of Bennington VT, we're kind of used to this type of weather. But this storm sounds like the mother of all storms. Back in Nov. we brought a couple of extra turkeys, so one is in the refrigerator now thawing out, we have a gas stove for cooking and a wood stove for heat and plenty of firewood. Beer, milk and plenty of vegetables from the garden last summer. Now we just have to shovel, just. Do a little at a time and we should be good.

47. Take it easy with the shoveling
thing. I know you're not 'old', I'm 60 myself and in my prime ;) but, if there are kids around looking for a few bucks I let them do it.

Better yet, move down here to NC. Not too hot and not too cold. Just right and no snow to speak of. :bounce:

76. C'mon down!
We nixed SC for the same reason. We live in the Triangle Area which has been invaded by NJ and NY. It's like being home without all the negatives. Check us out - Wake County. There is a town called Cary which is heavily made up of 'Yankees', the acronym is C -ontainment A -rea R -elocated Y- ankees.

The culture shock is that people are very warm, hospitable, and polite. I've lived here for 2 years and have yet to be flipped the bird by another driver, or had a car horn sounded for not hitting the gas fast enough to suit the idjit behind me, if I want to change lanes the other driver will usually let me thru and not accelerate to cut me off as happens 'up north'. I told my husband if I knew NC was this nice I'd have moved here years ago - with or without him.

For you the added bonus is that you'd be close to your son. :) :bounce: let's

58. It's Not To Bad!
We live in the country so we really don't get TV so to speak, no loss there. It would be nice to get broadband, so I wouldn't have to go to the library for the really big downloads. :)

53. We keep lucking out here in southern NH...
...with the worst of these big storms passing just south of us most of the time, and this time, just north of us.

We certainly deserve the break after the horrendous ice storm last winter.

55. you know, I'm watching The Day After Tomorrow on blu ray, that's supposed to be exaggerated,
but based on fact. I didn't read this until now, I'm on the deleted portion of the blu ray release. Kinda spooky looking at that graphic and having just watched the movie..

I'd say in TDAT I'd be dead frozen by now. But your groovy in Texas no doubt. (go figure)

79. My daughter lives in NYC
Poor little native Texan..she's been there since January and told me the other night that with all the snow she has seen so far, snow has "lost it's magic" for her.
We saw it so rarely (except for this year) it was a special thing to see it down here.
Then she was in DC for the first blizzard this winter.
Of course, at the time we talked, I'm not sure she knew what was headed ya'lls way this week..I texted to her afterwards about it with the words "ummmm, paralyzing blizzard????"
Stay safe!

80. Well, this has been a pretty snowy winter.
Other years it hasn't been this bad. I don't live in the city, but I'm right across the Hudson river on the Jersey side. So we get the same weather. I'm at work right now and the snow is coming down at a pretty steady rate. It's supposed to get worse as the day goes on. I'm hoping that they send us home early.

Tell your daughter to hang in there, spring is around the corner.

:D

57. All the while, a hundred miles up NORTH.....
In Montreal... Guess what... It's raining!

Quite little snow since mid-January, and a very thin layer left on the ground.

Climate change, and El Nino. Usually, all those storms pass over here.

Perhaps in March.

Stay safe.

62. If you are in the path of this storm, please consider taping all your windows
get some heavy packing tape-even duct tape- and place a large "X" across your windows at minimum. This can protect both them-and you-from high winds and flying debris, at least to a degree. Please stay safe everyone!

65. Just to add
Bring in or tie down anything from outside that could become a projectile in the wind. Encourage your neighbors to do so too.

What's the wind speed that starts tossing debris?
