U.S. gets say on which Canadians can fly
Source: Montreal Gazette

Starting in December, passengers on Canadian airlines flying to, from or even over the United States without landing there will be allowed to board the aircraft only after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has determined they are not terrorists.

Secure Flight, the newest weapon in the U.S.'s war on terrorism, gives the United States unprecedented power over who can board planes that fly over U.S. airspace -even if the flights originate and land in Canada.

The program, set to take effect globally in December, was created as part of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act, adopted by the U.S. Congress in 2004.

Canada's Parliament never adopted or even discussed the Secure Flight program - even though Secure Flight transfers the authority to screen passengers, and their personal information, from domestic airlines to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Anyone know if the Chicago Convention of 1944 (which gave countries the right to fly over another country without landing) was ever officially revised?

1. how in hell did Canada let this happen?
And what will be the procedure? All passenger info in Canada will be transferred to DHS prior to the plane taking off in Canada?

2. I remember reading way back when some stuff about the military too
and authority over them - it was during those time when bush would push things thorough while saying something different. Maybe someone with better research skills than me can find the information if it hasn't been deleted.

5. Let see how Americans like it!
I can't wait until every country in the world adopts this policy and so for a simple airflight, Americans will have to get clearance from say 5 other countries, any one of which could den them before they can fly.
