FDA warns of Salmonella risk from common flavor enhancer
Source: Washington Post

Thousands of types of processed foods -- including many varieties of soups, chips, hot dogs and salad dressings -- may pose a health threat because they contain a flavor enhancer that could be contaminated with Salmonella, the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday.

Salmonella was detected in one lot of hydrolyzed vegetable protein made by Basic Food Flavors Inc. as well as inside the company's Nevada manufacturing facility, according to the FDA. Basic Food Flavors Inc. is one of only a handful of companies that makes hydrolyzed vegetable protein, but its customer list is extensive

The FDA has posted on its Web site a list of products that are being recalled by their manufacturers. The list contained 56 products as of midafternoon and is expected to balloon. It can be found at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/HVPCP/.

Hydrolyzed vegetable protein is widely used by food processors to boost flavor in ways similar to monosodium glutamate. A company that bought the tainted protein from Basic Food Flavors notified the FDA after it found Salmonella in the lot, according to federal officials.

4. "Flavor enhancers"--do we even know what food is supposed to taste like anymore?
Hard to find food that isn't "engineered" in some way, unless it's totally unprocessed. Even meat is often "enhanced" with sodium and liquids. Anymore, just takes away my appetite.

6. Beware. Take care of your brain. Get smart.

http://www.truthinlabeling.org/hiddensources.html

Two lists - second one says 'protein'. Hydrologized vegetable protein - one of the ways to not say msg. It contains glutamates - same/similar reactions as to msg MonoSodium Glutamate. The label doesn's have to say msg if the msg additiven is not 100% pure. They other glutamates helps the manufacturer obfuscate ingredients. There may be up to 80% in glutamate, but msg need not be mentioned.

Truth in advertising - not.

It's the hydrolyzing process that creates the problem for the brain. It causes changes in the brain synapsis. Some doctors call msg a brain allergy.

I shudder when I see the crap fed to kids. Even candy has msg/glutamates.

Don't do this to yourself or a child.

Now let's see how fast it takes to get the worker bee for the lobbyists here. Glutamate Assn was, at one time, the country's largest lobbyist of the msg / glutamate manufacturers. Currently, the largest might now be the war weapons companies. Or it could be Xe/Blackwater.

21. Hydrolyzing protein is part of hte digestion process - it does not "create a problem for the brain"
'Hydrolyzing' a molecule means breaking it apart and attaching hydrogen and oxygen atoms (from a water molecule) to the two pieces. Proteins are long-chain molecules that have to be broken down into amino acids to be absorbed into the human body.

Humans are a good example of living organisms that ingest proteins as part of their nutritional requirements. However, protein molecules are generally quite large, and these large molecules cannot be transported across cell membranes for the same reason that you cannot bring an elephant through the door into your dorm room. Some organisms secrete proteolytic enzymes extracellular to break down the protein to its component monomeric amino acid units by hydrolyzing peptide bonds at the end of the polymer chain.

http://www.eng.umd.edu/~nsw/ench485/lab3.htm

In fact, the process that manufactures HVP isn't that far off the first stages of digestion - ie add hydrochloric acid, as your stomach does. The HVP process heats the protein a lot more, though. The difference between making HVP and soy sauce is that soy sauce uses the enzymes from molds or yeasts to do the hydrolysing in fermentation.

try to get it fresh and, if you can, directly from the organic salmon, before they spawn.

10. We're all rats in the lab of the food industry. For a real eye opener, read
Michael Pollan's books, and see "FOOD, Inc" You may be shocked, but probably not surprised, to learn of the ways our food chain is becoming something that is literally killing us.

We as individuals in this country spend billions on processed "food" and related health costs while Agri-business makes billions.

And we're all basically on our own to resist lousy food and eat better, because our food-lobby-controlled legislators have little incentive to make an issue of the trend.

However, the real health care costs for treating our increasingly un-healthy food options is another factor in the current desperate need for health care reform...

19. It's called deregulation
When companies don't fear an inspector from the GOVERNMENT might show up unannounced, there's little incentive to keep the equipment clean. Combine that with bean counters that try to squeeze every penny of profit out of a product to justify their jobs and you have a recipe for disaster.
