AFL-CIO leaders exhort members to 'Dump Bush'

By Thomas Ginsberg and Jane M. Von Bergen
Inquirer Staff Writers

Pennsylvania and national AFL-CIO leaders railed against President Bush yesterday and spelled out their strategy to defeat him based on an old formula: Agitate early and often.

"With everything we're doing, along with what the locals are doing, we can get this sucker out," Karen Ackerman, the AFL-CIO national political director, told the state convention in Philadelphia.

Pennsylvania is considered one of 16 or so battleground states where the presidential election may be decided. Organized labor will play a pivotal role and is throwing itself fully into the battle, allocating $44 million nationwide to identify, mobilize and sway its members to vote against Bush, officials said.

But while Kerry will be their likely choice, the union members made clear yesterday that disdain for Bush remains the unifying force for labor activists. Lapel pins promoting Kerry were far outnumbered by stickers saying "Dump Bush."
