Officials: Bali bombing mastermind may be dead
Source: Associated Press

"A top-ranked Southeast Asian militant wanted for planning the 2002 Bali bombings may have been killed in a shootout with police at an Internet cafe Tuesday moments after sitting at a terminal, authorities said. DNA tests were under way to confirm his identity.

Dulmatin, a 39-year-old Indonesian trained by al-Qaida in Afghanistan who goes by one name, is wanted in the suicide bombings that tore through two Bali nightclubs popular with Westerners, killing 202 people in Indonesia's deadliest terrorist attack.

He has been one of Southeast Asia's most wanted fugitives and was thought to have fled to the Philippines. The U.S. government offered a reward of up to $10 million for his capture.

Local media and two Indonesian authorities who did not want to be named said Dulmatin is believed to have been shot dead by police Tuesday in the Internet cafe, the first of three suspected militants killed in two coordinated raids southwest of the capital on the country's main island of Java."

1. Terrorists will get no sympathy from me...
I'd rather see them tried, but they have no problem killing others, if they die in a police shootout, I have no qualms.

2. Jakarta confirms death of Bali bombing suspect

Indonesian police have killed a most-wanted Islamist terror suspect in a shoot out capping a series of raids against a new militant network ahead of a visit next week by US president Barack Obama.

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the Indonesian president, announced on Wednesday during a lunch in Australia that Dulmatin, on whom the US had placed a $10m bounty, had died on Tuesday in a raid on the outskirts of Jakarta. Dulmatin allegedly assembled bombs used in the 2002 Bali attack that killed 202 people, almost half of whom were Australian.

Mr Yudhoyono went on to address the Australian parliament, the first time an Indonesian President has ever enjoyed this privilege, in the latest sign of the growing ties between the two countries. During his visit, the Australian and Indonesian governments agreed to work more closely on combating people smuggling and terrorism and will upgrade annual talks between leaders and officials to a level enjoyed by Australia’s closest ally, the U.S

Indonesia’s government has won praise for nearly wiping out Jemaah Islamiyah, an al-Qaeda-linked terror group which sought to carve out an Islamist state incorporating parts of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines and which was blamed for the Bali attack and several others afterward. The police raids on the islands of Java and Sumatra illustrate the lingering threat of terrorism and the ongoing vigilance of authorities to root out extremists.
