Protesters arrested in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Police arrested 18 protesters in San Francisco marking the first anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq on Friday, a spokeswoman said.
Several hundred demonstrators marched down San Francisco's main Market Street and others gathered in front of the worldwide headquarters of Bechtel, the privately held engineering firm involved in Iraq reconstruction projects.

A police spokeswoman said those arrested were charged with blocking the street and refusing to move when requested

They should not have blocked the street, however. People driving around the city are not necessarily war supporters, and they accomplish nothing by blocking traffic. I can't tell you how irritated some people get when streets are blocked. They can convey their antiwar message just fine from the sidewalk. No need to harass drivers. I say this as someone who opposed the Iraq war, btw.

So people who have NOTHING to do with the Iraq war should be late for meetings because people feel the need to protest. I AM ALL FOR YOUR RIGHT TO PROTEST, but that does not give you the right to block public streets.

Public streets are for cars, and pedestrians crossing the street. They are not meant to be blocked, and if these people refused to move, they deserved to be cited, if not arrested. For the record, I marched in NYC on February 15, 2003. I didn't go stand in the streets though. I stayed on the sidewalk, with most of the protesters. All that blocking the street does is PISS people off. It doesn't exactly rally people to your cause, ya know? But whatever, you probably don't care.
