Mother in Adoption Scandal Was Trying for Second Child
Source: ABC

The Tennessee mother who horrified the adoption community when she put her 7-year-old son on a plane back to Russia was in the process of trying to adopt a second child. Tennessee woman returns 7-year-old boy, claiming he has mental problems.Torry Hansen had turned to a second adoption agency to bring home a child from the Soviet Republic of Georgia, a source with the sheriff's department told ABC News.

She switched adoption agencies after the agency that arranged the adoption of her first child, World Association for Children and Parents, urged her to wait before adopting again, the source said. The association advised Hansen it would be best to settle in with the boy before adding to her family, the source said.

A few months later, Hansen, of Shelbyville, Tenn., and her mother, Nancy Hansen put 7-year-old Artyem Savilev on a plane back to Moscow in hopes of having the boy's adoption annulled. In a letter pinned inside Artyem's pocket, Hansen told Russian officials that he was violent, had psychiatric issues and that she no longer wanted to be his mother.

The Tennessee sheriff investigating the case said both Torry and Nancy Hansen have notified him through their lawyer that they refuse to be interviewed unless they are charged with a crime. He said he is looking into possible charges against the women.

"Abuse has been mentioned," Sheriff Randall Boyce said.

1. The US, EU and Russia should team together and say FUCK NO

on all adoptions attempts made by Ms. Hansen - she's mentally ill.

Sending a 7 year old boy back to Russia with no money, just a friggin' letter to the authorities that she doesn't want the kid.

She's an idiot in all regards. And totally and irrevocably barred from adopting again.

Oh and the TN sheriff can easily charge them for child abuse, child abandonment, and neglect.

If there was sexual abuse, she's heading for the Big Slammer.

2. What evidence do you have that she's mentally ill?
Maybe she's just a run-of-the-mill horrible person.

7. She arranged for someone to meet the child in Russia. A child his age

is allowed to fly alone on an airplane. She didn't do anything illegal (according to the sheriff). She is a horrible person, but didn't break any laws.

10. If he is mentally impaired as she claims, what a child his age can do
may not apply to him. She wants to have it both ways.

12. I disagree that she didn't break any laws.
And I'm shocked that she isn't rotting in a prison cell.

When you adopt a child, that child becomes just as legally and ethically yours as a child created and delivered of your own body. This woman took HER CHILD, shipped him halfway around the world, and had him dropped off at a government office with nothing more than a note.

Take your biological child, stick him into a taxi, and ship him to a DCFS office with a letter explaining that you don't want him anymore. Let's see how long you stay out of jail (I'd give it a day, tops).

A child is not an appliance or a puppy, and you don't get to send him back, EVEN IF HE IS BROKEN. Even if everything she said was true, and the child really was a danger to himself and her family, she still had a responsibility to get him the treatment he needed, including having him committed if that was actually justified. When she adopted him, she legally and willingly took on the role of his mother. She has a responsibility to act like one. When she failed, we have a responsibility to punish her like one.

9. Strangely enough, I think he's better off now...
If she wasn't able to just put him on a plane, I would not have put it past this woman to drive him 100 miles out into some thick woods and leave him there...

Or she could have simply set him up with some in-home "accident", since kids that age can be so inquisitive and careless...

8. Good chance she is.
In the video clip, the reporter stood in front of acres of a fenced-in compound where she and other family members lived. And the boy never was enrolled in school, nor was he registered for home schooling.

11. Shelbyville
Edited on Tue Apr-13-10 02:43 PM by Ian David
The city of Shelbyville was founded by Shelbyville Manhattan in 1796, who held the belief that people should be allowed to marry their cousins, because "they're so attractive"—a practice disallowed by fellow explorer and founder of Springfield, Jebediah Springfield. As a result of this disagreement, the two founders and their party split into separate groups, and went their own ways; since that time, the populaces of Springfield and Shelbyville have held a strong rivalry apparently to the point of violence.

13. Not sure I understand. They're saying she returned the boy to clear the way to adopt a 2nd one?
Not sure I understand. If that's so, wouldn't returning the first one work against her in the second adoption? Why is she so hell bent on adopting a child from Russia?

14. she exemplifies every negative stereotype the world has
of americans being selfish and superficial. she should be made to do thousands of hours of community service at a shelter or orphanage.
