Screams of delight for Michelle Obama in Mexico
By DARLENE SUPERVILLE, Associated Press Writer
Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at noon

MEXICO CITY — Michelle Obama stepped from her black SUV and into a sea of screams, cheers and squeals of delight that filled the sun-splashed courtyard of a public elementary school Wednesday in Mexico's capital.

Dozens of 6- to 12-year-old students - some in costumes, others in gym clothes - welcomed America's first lady with a show.

One group dressed as Aztecs in white paper costumes and caps with multicolored feathers performed a Mexican ritual dance. Another group did calisthenics for Mrs. Obama, whose cause at home is a campaign against childhood obesity. Other kids entertained with a lively twist-style dance, and they were followed by a chorus that serenaded her.

Mrs. Obama joined in at one point, clasping hands with a group that had formed a circle and singing along with students at the Escuela Siete de Enero, which is in one of Mexico City's poorer neighborhoods.

11. Special dates in Mexican history are used as names....
for places and even many streets. January 7th appears to be to be referring to a workers' strike which took place in Veracruz.

2. She and President Obama are the best bridge-builders to the world this nation has...
... bar none. It is important that we show as much interest in supporting Mexico as we do Canada. Let's face it, Pres. Calderon needs help battling drug rings, which threaten to destabilize the nation. After all, drug barons have ruled Mexico for decades and is rumored to control much of the local police and government as well.

15. "Next year's foreign aid budget provides for police training, not equipment."
Edited on Thu Apr-15-10 11:40 AM by ClarkUSA
The Merida Initiative was started under BushCo.

... the U.S. Congress passed legislation in late June 2008 to provide Mexico with $400 million and Central American countries with $65 million this year for the Mérida Initiative. The initiative was announced on 22 October 2007 and signed into law on June 30, 2008.

During the fifth summit of the Americas in April 2009, the leaders of several Caribbean nations stated to a group of U.S. congressmen that they have a desire to join the Mérida Initiative, as a crackdown in Mexico could push drug traffickers' operations into their island nations.

President Obama is wisely going to focus on police training from now on, so the U.S. will not be "sending lots more guns---that ought to stabilize things."

Top leaders from the US and Mexico agreed to emphasize intelligence coordination in the next $331 million phase of the Merida Initiative following discussions in Mexico City on March 23. Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Government Secretary Fernando Francisco Gómez-Mont hosted the meeting with US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Adm. Mike Mullen, and National Intelligence director Dennis C. Blair.

In a break with established strategy, resources will now begin to shift away from military assistance. More than half of the $1.3 billion spent under the Merida Initiative was used to buy aircraft and other materiél for the Mexican army and police. Next year's foreign aid budget provides for police training, not equipment.

U.S. first lady visits museum, schools in Mexico
14:55, April 15, 2010

U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday visited Mexico's National Museum of Anthropology and History, regarded as one of the most important cultural sites in Latin America.

She was accompanied by her Mexican counterpart Margarita Zavala. They had a private meeting before going to the museum and discussed the issues of youth drug addiction and migrants.

Michelle Obama arrived in Mexico on Tuesday, kicking off her first solo tour abroad. The fist lady's visit to Mexico sought to "approach the Mexican people, mainly the youth," the U.S. embassy here said in a statement earlier.

The Mexican government tightened security around the museum, including 2,000 agents of the Mexican Federal Police and of the U.S. Secret Service.

After the tour, Michelle Obama and Zavala enjoyed an outdoor concert by the Carlos Chavez Orchestra, and the performance by a choir of disabled Mexican children.
